There are a total of 124 pieces: a complete uppercase letter set, a complete number set, and some punctuation/special characters. The set is unmarked and we could not identify the manufacturer, but our research leads us to believe the typeface could be classified as Gothic Treble Extra Condensed. We believe it can be compared to several typefaces found in early wood type catalogs: the Wm. H. Page & Co. Gothic Treble Extra Condensed Class C wood type found on p. 25 of the 1878 specimen book “Specimens of Wood Type Manufactured by the Wm. H. Page Wood Type Co.”; the Hamilton No. 97 Class L Gothic found on p. 51 of the 1899-1900 specimen book “Hamilton’s Wood Type Catalogue No. 14”; or the Morgans & Wilcox Gothic XXX Condensed Class L found on p. 12 of the 1890 “Condensed Specimen Book of Wood Type Manufactured by Morgans & Wilcox Man’f’g Co.” One of the differences we noticed between our specimen and the ones noted above is the angle and transition of the spine as seen with the letter S (the catalog specimens all have smoother curves while this one has a more angular transition. Also, the letter R in each of the catalog specimens has a slight curve at the foot of the leg, whereas the leg of the R in this set is straight. It is a sans serif typeface that we believe dates between the 1860s and the early 1900s based on the other type specimens it was found with (see our other listings to view the entire collection and the original type cabinet in which this set was housed). We welcome any information that might help us to definitively identify the maker. As would be expected, the set overall exhibits wear appropriate with its age with individual pieces varying in condition, and some or all of them having some or all of the following: general wear, chips, scratches, nicks, dents, gouges, edge wear, dirty and/or stained areas, marks, discoloration, vestigial ink, adhered paper remnants on reverse, etc. (see pictures). We are unsure as to what type of wood the set is made from. The set weighs roughly 9 lbs 12 oz. This 124-piece antique set of 25-line 4.16" Gothic Treble Extra Condensed letterpress wood type is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
