Each bag is handcrafted from the finest materials available and built to last for generations to come. Our customer base includes world travelers, business professionals, students, weekend warriors and “leather lovers” who appreciate our bags as functional works of art and don’t mind being asked, “Great bag. Where’d you get it?” several times a day    We begin with the real deal, full-grain leather, expertly tanned to bring out its natural beauty, including all those wonderful scratches and scars. These “imperfections” give our bags character and set them apart from the mass-produced “cookie cutter” bags that seem to be everywhere these days.    In a hand-made process, firstly the leather is lined with premium suede and cut into one of several unique and timeless patterns. Then the bag is hand assembled by skilled artisans using thick nylon stitching. Stylish rivets and rings are added to reinforce potential points of extra stress and wear and functional nickel-plated buckles provide the finishing touch. The result is a ruggedly elegant bag that actually gets better the more you use it.     Awhile ago I wore a hole in my favorite pair of jeans, just when they were getting good.  On a whim I used a small piece of leather to patch the hole (pictured right). At first the patch was a little stiff, but after a few weeks of wearing, it softened up and took on a darker richer hue that looked pretty cool.     The same is true of our bags. Although full-grain handcrafted leather looks great from the get-go, over time each bag will take on its own unique appearance, depending on weather, environment, and how much it’s used. With every trip a new series of “character marks” will appear, each with its own story to tell. That’s how it is with high-quality leather. So, if you’re looking for a flawless bag that’s made to maintain a shiny vinyl-like appearance, our bags are not for you.         Our expert craftsmen realize that the weakest link in any leather bag is the thread that binds it together.  The first bag in the picture (above left) was machine sewn with thread that is a standard in the industry. This type of thread is subject to fraying, breaking and stretching which creates loose seams. Our bags are hand sewn with heavy-duty nylon thread, which like our leather is designed to last a lifetime. Oil Tanned Leather     Tanning is the process of treating skins of animals to produce leather, which is more durable and less susceptible to decomposition.     Tanning leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein structure of skin. Making “rawhide” (untanned but worked hide) does not require the use of tannin. Rawhide is made by removing the flesh and fat and then the hair by use of an aqueous solution (this process is often called “liming” when using lime and water or “bucking” when using wood ash (lye) and water), then scraping over a beam with a somewhat dull knife, then drying. The two aforementioned solutions for removing the hair also act to clean the fiber network of the skin and allow penetration and action of the tanning agent, so that all the steps in preparation of rawhide except drying are often preludes to the more complex process of tanning and production of leather. Before tanning, the skins are unhaired, degreased, desalted and soaked in water over a period of 6 hours to 2 days.     To accommodate this, old tanning agents, such as alum and salts were replaced by newer chemicals.     Chromium tanning was invented in the 1800?s, which enabled a shorter time in the entire process. In addition, instead of using clay lined pits, the tanners began using rotating drums. The drums allowed the hide to be subjected to the actual ’tanning’ step of the process more thoroughly and quicker.      Leather tanning is without a doubt one of the oldest human activities. In the beginning, skins obtained from hunting and livestock breeding could be used for clothing or tents, but they became stiff at low temperatures, while they rotted with heat. It was probably then that attempts were made to render them more flexible and stronger by rubbing in animal fats; the first rudimental tanning process is mentioned in Assyrian texts and in Homers Iliad.   The name of tan is applied to coarsely powdered bark which is obtained mostly from oak and hemlock trees, although all barks contain more or less tannin, and in some countries the extract of others is used. To tan a skin is to saturate it with tannin in such a manner as to promote the slow combination of this principle with the gelatine, albumen, and fibrine contained in the former. Tanning is a general term used for the process of converting animal skins to finished leather. Animal hides and skins absorb tannins to keep them from decaying and to keep them pliable. Technically, the term “tanning” refers to the process by which collagen fibers in a hide react with a chemical agent (tannin, alum or other chemicals), but the term leather tanning also commonly refers to the entire leather making process. The most common tanning agents used in the U. S. are trivalent chromium and vegetable tannins extracted from specific tree barks.  The best tanning factories/companies are from German, USA, Italy. Most of them use oversea branches to do the tanning process. They export fresh raw cowhide to South Asia, like Vietnam or India to remove the fur and blood (heavy pollution); after that, the dry and cleaned products sent to other countries to do the final process, like tanning; then import back. Mexico also produces some leather; the leather from Mexico normally is thick and stiff. One of known leather company based on Texas who sell leather bags online has tanned factory on the board in Mexico and produce quite heavy leather bags as well. Bags Repair     Most bag repairs do not require special tools. If you have basic sewing skills, it will be much easier for you to utilize the free resources available on youtube. Basic tools: needle, nylon thread, rivet, screwdriver or hammer. Tandy leather has over 200 stores around the world and provide everything you need. Or Wal-Mart, Amazon or eBay etc. We do have some spare parts in stock just in case our customers need to replace a loose or missing part/item. Wal-Mart, Amazon or EBay are also great avenues for finding spare or replacement parts/items.     Highly engineered industrial nylon is used on our products. You can find the exact same nylon available at Tandy Leather Factory. Other companies like Ohio travel bag sell accessories as well. Wholesale amounts may be the only option available. We use two different kinds of rivets for our bags: double cap and heavy duty screw rivets. Double cap rivets cost $0.06 from Tandy Leather, which is the most common type you can find in the market. To install it, it requires a special tool, like a Craftool Rivet Setter and Hammer to punch the male cap into the female cap. The front end of the male cap will explode inside the female cap causing it to fasten. Otherwise it may become loose or it may eventually fall out. For key areas we use copper made screw rivets that are specially manufactured from hardware factory. This type of rivet is coated with nickel and it will not rust if it gets wet. It is also easy to install. All you need for installation is a screwdriver, and a pair of pliers. However, if the rivets aren’t tight enough, it might spin out over an extended period of time. Thick leather can also push outward and against the rivet, causing it to spin out as well. Fidgeting with the rivets may cause them to slowly spin out also. Leather Care and Maintenance     The leather we sell is oil tanned leather. Oil tanned leather has two categories: light oil tanned and heavy oil tanned.  Most of our bags are heavy oil tanned. The heavy oil tanned leather has more wax oil inside, which will protect the leather and preserve it for a very long time.  You can add oil with wax to the leather at anytime, if you choose to. Any oil you apply to the leather will darken its color. The leather will also become smooth and shiny.   The light oil tanned leather has two different leather finishes: one is the raw looking finish; another is a hard finish, which mean the outside has a rich oil coated surface. Certainly you can apply oil to the raw looking finish and the leather will become smooth, shiny and darken as well. Even if you apply different color oil, the leather will change to the color you apply.    However with the hard-finish oil these same rules will not apply. The surface has the color sealed into it. If you happen to scratch it, you should buy the same color shoe polish, mink oil, or any other leather oil of the same color to apply upon the scratched area.   Along with the bag, there is a tag on it.  If you want to experiment with color change or test, you can try on that small piece first to see how it works out for you.  (The right side images include three different finished leather bags for reference.) Recommended leather oil products would be colorless shoe oil, lexol oil, mink oil, or something similar. One customer from Russia applied milk oil on her L81 model bag. She turned the raw brown finished bag into a dark shiny finish in just several hours. (pictures to the left)   We have lifetime support. As long as you have the bag, we will help you fix any issue you may have with the bag. If the bag arrives to you defective, has missing parts or the wrong item. We will take care of it for you.   G For more information or suggestions on how to maintain your bag, please check our blogs at the Vagabond Traveler website. Frankly to say, it is rough leather bag, not an unblemished finished leather bag. The leather was tanned by oil, not paint. Scratches are very common and you do not need the special care or maintenance to have them removed. Some fans of leather use different leather solutions or oil to change the color of their bag and it is totally a personal choice. Enjoy your bag for the long haul! Return, Refund and Exchange     If you are not pleased with your purchase, you may return it for exchange or refund. Provided the item is in the same condition it was in when you received it. Returns must be processed within 14 days. If you un-wrap the item(s) or move any parts there will be up to a 10% processing and handling charge. Return postage paid will be deducted from total refund if not a product defect, damaged item or wrong item shipped. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
