There are a total of 108 pieces: a nearly complete uppercase letter set (missing the letters C and N), a complete number set (at least 2 of each), and some punctuation/special characters. The set is unmarked and we could not identify the manufacturer, but our research leads us to believe the typeface could be classified as De Vinne Condensed. Though not an exact match, it can be compared to the 6-line Hamilton No. 634 we currently have listed (found on p. 80 of the 1899-1900 specimen book “Hamilton’s Wood Type Catalogue No. 14”). It is a serif typeface that we believe dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s based on when the font was introduced and on the other early type specimens it was found with (see our other listings to view the entire collection and the original type cabinet in which this set was housed). De Vinne was designed by Gustav Schroeder in 1890 and is described in the Hamilton catalog as follows: This Series in Metal Type is well known as “DE VINNE.” Made in wood by permission of the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Mo. As would be expected, the set overall exhibits wear appropriate with its age with individual pieces varying in condition, and some or all of them having some or all of the following: general wear, chips, scratches, nicks, dents, gouges, edge wear, dirty and/or stained areas, marks, discoloration, vestigial ink, adhered paper remnants on reverse, etc. (see pictures). A few of the pieces also have some large missing pieces of wood from the side areas. We are unsure as to what type of wood the set is made from. The set weighs roughly 1 lb 2 oz. This 108-piece antique set of 5-line 0.83" De Vinne Condensed letterpress wood type is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
