When Linotype: The Film was conceived of in 2010 at my Springfield, Missouri letterpress print shop which operates two Mergenthaler Linotype machines (a Model 5 and a Model 33), neither the director, Doug Wilson, nor myself, Tim Trower, had any idea that the documentary would be the overwhelming success that it has become. Throughout 2010 and 2011, the film crew visited the shop about ten times for filming; sometimes myself or my father operating the machine, one time just to record sounds of the machine as it operated, and another time filming the Model 5 against a green screen for use in animating the process this complex linecaster goes through as it sets and casts an entire line of type. (This latter footage was never used, in spite of an entire day of filming.) As a tribute to the role that my father, Guy Trower, and I played in the film, as well as in homage to the Linotype machine itself, we have produced a limited edition poster in our shop – one that is suitable for and ready for framing. As a throw-back to the glory days of hot metal and letterpress in the 1950s, the poster has been set using the types of that era; the Linotype logo is a stylized design used during the 1950s by the Mergenthaler Linotype Company. This letterpress printed and foil stamped poster has been produced with black ink, black matte foil, and metallic bronze foil on Neenha Classic Columns “Red Pepper” 80 lb. cover-weight paper. Using a 1948 Brandtjen and Kluge letterpress, the bronze image of a Linotype magazine was foiled first followed by the black matte foil image of the Linotype machine. The black ink was then printed using our Vandercook Model 3 Proof Press. The poster was printed using exclusively the equipment of White Star Service Company, the inspiration of and primary filming location for the movie. The poster was personally foil stamped and printed by myself, Tim Trower, a film participant and the technical advisor for the film. This is limited to an edition of 85; each is signed and hand-numbered in the lower right-hand corner. The poster measures 8.5” x 11” and is shipped flat, well protected, in a heavy rigid mailer. Postage and mailing costs of $4.50 are included in the cost of the poster within the United States. Postage to Canada is an additional $5.00. International shipping is available; please contact us for details before placing a bid. The four images illustrate the poster: First, as a completed poster. Second, the type for the job locked on the bed of the press. Third, a foil stamped sheet locked in the grippers of our Vandercook Proof Press ready for printing. Fourth, a completed sheet, freshly inked and ready for drying and hand numbering.
