While playing bridge with his friends and family, he found it difficult to get comfortable while sitting. The chairs in those days were not designed for moving on carpeting. He set out to design a chair with casters. After many years of designing, prototyping and testing, the original Shepherd Planet Ball Caster was born. This began a legacy of well-engineered, high-quality Shepherd casters. In 1976, the first die cast twin wheel, the Pacer, was put into production at Shepherd. This product allowed us to expand our market presence beyond home furnishings and into the growing office seating market. As mobility became increasingly important in everyday life, we continued to expand into light industrial, store fixture, and appliance markets with several lines of single wheel casters.
