Plakie Children’s Toys were made in Youngstown, Ohio from the 1920’s (wooden) until the 1970’s and sold nationally in many Toy / Christmas catalogs and department stores. The infant’s “Play Key” was a very popular item. This is the actual tooling that pressed some of the original toys. Over 20 yrs. ago I was offered the opportunity to purchase this group of molds from the new owners of the old factory. Being a moldmaker I immediately bought them with the intention of re-using the mold bases with different cavities. When I opened them up and saw the outstanding workmanship from a time before CAD, CNC Machining and CNC EDM (which wasn’t remotely as commonplace even 20 yrs. ago – let alone when the molds were actually made) I decided not to gut them out. These molds were made by, in many cases engravers who made hobs that were pressed into cavity blocks or beryllium cavities cast from artist’s models. Most of the people who knew how to make molds that way are dead… The mold cavities are in good condition (see pics). Most of the mold bases have light exterior rust. Many of these molds run water so they were rusty 20 yrs. ago. The ejector plates move. The leader pins are good. The molds could be sampled with minimal cleaning and lubrication in probably nothing larger than a 75 ton press with plain old polyethylene or polypropylene which was cutting edge resin back then. Buy these molds and revive a piece of American History! In 20 years I haven’t found time.
