I have a John R. Hollingsworth model MEP-004A 15kWh military diesel generator with 742 hours on it and sitting on a 1980 M201A1 trailer made by Utility Tool & Body Co. for sale. The generator was manufactured for the military in March of 1987, and the national stock number (NSN) is 6115-00-118-1241. This sale includes both the trailer and the generator. If you want to purchase the generator without the trailer, it sells for the same price as if you bought the generator with the trailer; it’s a package deal. The generator has two new 6TL batteries as of March 2016 (NAPA), as it operate off a 24 volt system. The fuel float switch has been replaced, as has the fuel level relay (K8). The fuel level gauge has been tested and responds appropriately to the fuel level switch. Despite all this, the fuel level gauge is still of, and this is typical of nearly every U.S. military fuel gauge in the world. All gauges and controls work as they should, with the exception of the inaccurate fuel gauge that I already mentioned. It reads 1/3 of a tank when it should read 2/3 of a tank. The generator and trailer are both painted in Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) camouflage sand colored paint, and it was last painted in May of 2005. There is a CARC substitute paint (less toxic than CARC) available online from RapcoParts. The generator and trailer appear to have been kept outside by the military most of their life, as there is light surface rust on some of the panels and edges of both the trailer and generator. This generator was load tested by Twin Cities Generator LLC out of St. Paul, Minnesota on June 6, 2016. They tested it at full rated output for a little over one hour. At almost 6,000 watts on each of the three phases, full load frequency was 60hz and no-load frequency was 62.5hz. Here are their comments: “water temp held steady at 162 degrees throughout testing, oil pressure held steady at 58psi throughout testing, no faults indicated, no obvious leaks, no excessive exhaust smoke, no abnormal sounds, excellent performing generator.” Included in the set of auction photos is a photo of the load bank testing machine display at full output and a photo of the generator display panel gauges at full output. I can send you a copy of the testing report if you are interested. The MEP-004A is utility class, 50/60 hertz, 3 phase, 4 wire, 120/208 volt diesel generator. It is a fully enclosed, self-contained, skid mounted, portable unit. The MEP-004A is equipped with controls, instruments, and accessories necessary for operation as single unit or in parallel with one or more units of the same class and mode. The set is equipped with engine oil pan heating elements and necessary connections for field installation of winterization kits. Lifting devices for hoisting the generator set are located at the top of the lifting frame and center support assembly. Tubular cross members, that will accept a chain, have been provided at the front and rear of the skid base assembly to permit towing for short distances. The MEP-004A generator has a shipping weight (without trailer) of 2,450 lbs., a length of 70”, a width of 36”, and a height of 55”. It comes with a 15 gallon fuel tank; it takes eight quarts of oil and one gallon of hydraulic fluid. There is a quick and easy modification that you can do to this unit to turn it into a single phase generator. That process is detailed on both YouTube and Steel Soldiers. Power source for the MEP-004A generator set is a four cylinder, four cycle, fuel injected, Iiquid-cooled diesel engine by White Engines, Inc. Hercules Engine Division model D-198-ERX51. The engine electrical system contains a cranking motor, two 12-volt batteries in series, and a battery charging alternator with integral rectifier and voltage regulator. The engine is also equipped with a fuel filter and strainer assembly, a secondary fuel filter, a lubricating oil filter, and an air cleaner. Cooling water is circulated through the engine by a water pump. Safety devices automatically stop the engine during conditions of high coolant temperature, low oil pressure, no fuel, over-speed, or over-voltage. Its rated horsepower at 1500 RPM is 35 continuous; its rated horsepower at 2000 RPM is 45 continuous. This alternating current generator is a single bearing, drip-proof, synchronous, brushless, three phase, fan-cooled generator by Electric-Machinery Mfg. Co. Rated voltages are maintained by excitation of the generator-exciter field by a static exciter mounted on the relay table. The cooling fan, located at the front of the generator, impels cooling air which enters the generator and passes over the windings. Safety devices are provided to protect the generator in the event of short circuit, overload, under-voltage, under-frequency, reverse power, and over-voltage. The generator set control cubicle is located at the rear top of the generator set and contains controls and instruments for operating the engine and the generator. The control panel is grounded to protect the operator from electrical shock in the event of a short in the equipment. The generator section of the control panel contains meters for monitoring generator output, adjusting knobs for increasing and decreasing frequency (Class 1 only) and voltage, and a circuit breaker switch for interrupting all output from the generator set. Also included on the generator control panel are an operations switch and synchronizing lights for operating the set as a single unit or in parallel with other units. The engine section of the control panel contains switches for priming, starting, and stopping the engine and meters for monitoring set fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. Also included is an ammeter for the battery charging alternator. The mechanical governing system of the generator provides the controls and load responses necessary for efficient single unit, or parallel, operation of utility-class generator sets. Engine RPM and set frequency are controlled by the mechanical governor, an integral part of the fuel injection pump, which actuates the fuel metering valve. Adjustment of engine RPM and set frequency is accomplished by use of a manual speed control located adjacent to the control cubicle. This control is a knob-type device which permits rapid frequency adjustment, locking in any position, and vernier adjustment for finer control. The M200A1 is an open-frame, single-axle, four-wheeled trailer chassis designed to transport an electric generator. The national stock number (NSN) is 2330-00-331-2307. It has a load capacity of 7,000 lbs. on the highway and 5,000 lbs. cross-country. Speed is restricted to 55 mph (88.5 km/h) on improved roads and 30 mph (48.3 km/h) on unimproved roads or cross country. The M200A1 trailer has a lunette ring and must be towed by a vehicle with a pintle hitch. It works off a 24 volt system, and the brakes are air over hydraulic with an operating pressure of 60 PSI. The length to the center of the lunette ring is 163”; the overall width is 89”, and the height is 38”. The weight of the M200A1 trailer empty/unloaded is 2,015 lbs. There are four tires on the single axle, all are 9.0 x 20 size military pneumatic. The Tiers are Titan NDCC (Non-directional Cross Country) T-Hawk 373 (model), regroovable, 4-ply, nylon tube type, nylon cord sidewall, load rage D, and made in the U.S.A. The D.O.T. date indicates the tires were made in the 24th week of 1998; there is no cracking or dry rot, and the tires look like they have very few miles on them. Air is supplied to the trailer through gladhand connections from the towing vehicle. The gladhands are marked, one for emergency and the other for service (brakes), to ensure correct hookup. There are several Technical Manuals (TM) for this generator and trailer that were published by the military. All relevant TMs will be provided in PDF form saved to a USB drive. These TMs will allow you to identify replacement parts, perform diagnostics, perform maintenance, and perform repairs. If you want to look for and download one of the TMs to take a closer look at this item, do a Google search for “TM 5-6115-625-14&P” for the generator and “TM 9-2320-205-14&P” for the trailer. You can pick up the trailer in Grey Could Island, which is near South Saint Paul, Minnesota. This unit could be shipped freight, but that would require hauling it on a lowboy trailer or something similar - at your expense. I will coordinate freight on my end, as Ebay requires tracking information for their guarantee system. In any event, this listing requires payment in full through PayPal before pickup or delivery.
