Summary of Contents: INDEXING . . . . . pages 1 to 53 The two types of indexing, linear and circular, are covered in detail in this section. Illustrations and accompanying explanations show how linear indexing is used in spacing holes and rack teeth. Circular indexing is done with in indexing head. The index head and the different kinds of indexing possible with an index lead are explained fully. Why the index plates have holes in them, how these holes are used in indexing, and the gearing needed to drive the index head from the table feed screw are discussed in detail. Numerous examples of indexing and gear calculations are used in the instruction on indexing. SPIRAL WORK . . . . . pages 54 to 87 What a helix is, how it is generated, and instruction on how to determine the lead of the helix, the angle of the helix, and the lead of the milling machine are given here. The proper and the improper methods of cutting helixes, and the necessary gearing for use with a spiral-index head, are discussed. in detail. An informative discussion on the types of cams, how they are cut, and the setups necessary for cutting them complete this section. HINTS AND SPECIAL FEATURES . . . . . pages 88 to 99 Here are good sound practices to follow so errors can be avoided in indexing and spiral work. Also given careful consideration is tle effect of changing the inclination of the index-head spindle. Small index heads, wide-range and astronomical dividers, and hypoid-bevel-gear universal index heads complete this section.
