All my stock of carbon steel, of low-alloy steels and one of ingot iron of this size are listed here; there are no others available and no possibility of any back orders.  The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), formerly the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The NBS issued standard samples of industrial materials which were carefully analyzed in a number of selected laboratories and their results averaged. A certificate listing the chemical compositions of the standard samples was provided along with each small piece (each is a rod 1/2 inch in diameter by 2 inches long in the present instance).  These pieces were obtained by us from an industrial laboratory which was closing its doors for good. They are in their original "cigar tubes" and their markings match the tube's markings. The original certificates are long gone, but various U.S. government agencies have thoughtfully archived nearly all the certificates of samples issued in the past and you can find these NIST/NBS certificates yourself by googling the term, "certArchive.cfm" for Standard Samples 802 through 830 contained in the following tables. Descriptions of the various Standard Samples of steel alloys: Note: Apparently identical descriptions of different Standard Samples do not indicate identical compositions or date codes as marked on the packaging; that is the result of packing & shipping in different batches. The date codes on the packages do not match the dates of the certificates. However, Standard Samples with the same number are indeed of the same composition, as indicated by the compositions listed in differently dated published lists of the National Bureau of Standards. About the photographs: The nine images show all the Standard Samples of this configuration; review them all to see the various conditions of the working end of each Standard Sample. Twelve of the Standard Samples are either in unopened packages or were prepared for emission spectroscopy but never used; and eleven of the twenty-three are in used condition, with arc strikes on one or both ends. These arc strikes can easily be ground off with a belt sander so as to return the end surface to the condition of the original bar. Every Standard Sample in this auction is represented in these images, but you are bidding on an individual item with the option to choose one or more additional ones at the bid price, with the final price calculated from the bid price times the number chosen (used samples counting as one-half item each), plus shipping, not the entire lot of twenty-three items. "Used" Standard Samples below have all been subjected to electrical discharge spectroscopy. A wavelength-dispersive spectrometer then separates the light emitted by the various elements, and the intensities of those separate wavelengths of light are measured quantitatively. The composition of the specimen under study is determined by interpolation of its measured light intensities between the intensities produced by other specimens of similar composition. Specimens of known composition are an essential ingredient in the accurate determination of the elemental composition of unknown specimens, as the standard specimens have had their compositions measured by independent laboratories with state of the art equipment that would be too expensive for a local laboratory to maintain. You could also use these standard samples as references in the analysis of unknown steels by electron microbe wavelength spectroscopy (as in Amenex's former ETEC Autoprobe, which we sold on eBay about fourteen years ago) or by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The NIST is currently charging up to several hundred dollars for similar standard samples as you can see by googling "pricerpt.cfm", but the standard samples with the numbers listed above have long been out of stock.
Condition New other (see details) :
A new, unused item with absolutely no signs of wear. The item may be missing the original packaging, or in the original packaging but not sealed. The item may be a factory second or a new, unused item with defects. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.
Seller Notes These National Bureau of Standards Standard Samples are in mixed condition; several are in their original unopened packages; others are in new condition but have been prepared for use as emission spectroscopy standards, and some have already been used for that purpose, i.e., to calibrate an electrical discharge emission spectrometer. All the used ones retain nearly all of their original length.
