Style: Sound Level MeterVerified Purchase I bought the SL510 model because this is a very affordable and compact Class 2 sound level meter (most of these usually begin from 200 USD) from a reputable manufacturer like Extech. I also have a Class 2 calibrator and could gauge the accuracy of the SL510. It came properly calibrated out of the box and was only within 0.1 dBA from the actual signal emitted by the calibrator. I corrected the difference and tested it again at 94 dBA, 104 dBA, and 114 dBA (all three at 1000 Hz), and each time the reading was absolutely accurate. To learn how to do calibration, you need to download the SL510 manual from the Extech website. I like the fact that calibration is done through pressing a combination of buttons and not by turning a potentiometer screw with a tiny screwdriver. Calibration is very important and needs to be done once or twice a year, but if you need to use the device for measurements within a few months of receiving it, it is likely going to be very accurate out of the box and only within 0.1 or 0.2 dBA of the actual sound level. Keep in mind that you should always do a C-weighted reading, in addition to an A-weighted reading, especially if the sound is in the lower frequency spectrum. For instance, testing my white noise machine with the SL510 shows 41dBA and 49 dBC. Playing an electric guitar at "room-level" quieter amplification shows a reading of 57 dBA and 67 dBC. In each case, the dBC captures the volume of the lower frequencies better, even if the dBA scale is the one usually used to judge whether a hearing hazard exists. In fact, one should always use a Z-weighted reading to gauge sound hazards but only very expensive devices (that usually cost 1000+ USD) have an in-built Z-weighting. Other impressions: the SL510 has an option to turn on a backlit display and can capture and record the peaks and minimums of longer sound measurements. It has a solid feel and there is definite weight to the microphone. It is powered by three AAA batteries, which is preferable to a 9V battery. It is fairly compact and very portable - can definitely fit in a jacket pocket, etc. It is made in Taiwan. Overall, this is a great buy at this price level. There are many cheaper alternatives out there, but those come with very questionable pre-calibration and usually come with no instructions about re-calibration (I had to return one such a few months ago). The SL510, on the other hand, came properly pre-calibrated and the online manual is detailed and helpful. Last - this is a Class 2 meter, which can be used as evidence in court in any legal disputes where a sound measurement is necessary. Class 1 meters usually start around 600-700 USD and are too expensive for the average user. Class 1 and Class 2, by the way, are better than Type 1 and Type 2 meters (those last two are older standards used about 20+ years ago). If you want a relatively inexpensive but accurate sound-measuring device - this is one of the best options.
