The impeller spins in an area of the volute that is completely out of the liquid flow path. Since the impeller is not in the flow path of the volute, it provides full flow through capability and provides “gentle” handling of solids in suspension to prevent the degradation of friable solids (e.g. – carbon transfer in carbon-in-pulp gold recovery process). It’s also well-suited for handling slurries containing high concentrations of stringy, fibrous solids and large solids. Basically, whatever goes into the pump suction will be pumped out as long as the solids are smaller than the discharge connection.
