US $3800

  • Onalaska, Washington, United States

2016 is our 7th year of teaching this one day class in which you will learn all you need to know to build yourself a log building from the foundation to finish. The class is about 60% Powerpoint and 40% hands-on and includes CD of the Powerpoint, a 37 page booklet, approved blueprints to our log garage, a wooden model kit to practice assembly with, and includes a catered lunch. Class size is limited to 8 people so there is plenty of opportunity for all questions. The Saturday May 28 has 2 seats and the Saturday June 25 has 1 seat remaining, see other dates available below.  The May 8 and May 14 classes were great folks with lots of enthusiasm.  Please see the webpage listed below for more details on the class. We built 11 log buildings on our property; our house in 1980, garage in 1981 and one building each year since 2006 with trees we planted in 1981 (see webpage photo link below, my nephews call our place Jack City). Building method is the butt and pass which does not require logs to be seasoned and corners are not notched (takes skill to notch).  Log assembly requires no equipment and is done with ropes and pulley blocks, and construction is code compliant. Our house cost $20K to build in 1980 and is now valued at $250K. We strongly recommend taking this class before buying a log kit, it may save you $$ thousands, log kits in our area have failed, a realtor has hired me to recommend remedies for failing kits, from what I've seen, the kits fail within 7 yrs, repairs cost about $15K and does not solve the design problem, take the class and find out why. Many of our students have previously taken a class elsewhere but were not satisfied, however, you don't have to take another class before taking this one. The class does not show you how to build a million dollar lodge but if you want a log cabin or log house (1,600 sq ft), you can save a ton of money here.  We estimate that a log house (1,600 sq ft) will cost you around $130K including well and septic.  Our 200 sq ft buildings cost us between $2,500 to $4,500 to build, not counting the $1K value of the logs.  Completing a kit is estimated at 3-5x kit cost, so a $100K kit may end up being $400-500K to finish, and then possibly having that kit fail really hurts.   The class is conducted in our log home and no prior building experience is needed (I didn't even take shop in high school). We are located about halfway between Seattle and Portland. Tuition price is $325 pp and the group rate for 2 or more is $300 pp.   The eBay bid is for the $50 pp deposit to reserve your seat, with the balance due on the day of the class.  We will send you information on directions, etc., after receiving your deposit.  As of  May 15, here is seat availability: Class day      seats available. May 28                2 June 25                1 Aug  6                 8 Sept 3                  8 Oct   2*               7    * Sunday      What a great birthday or graduation present; learn how to build affordable and cool housing. Satisfaction guaranteed.  Many folks lack the confidence that they can build a log building.  With our hands-on training, you will be able to do it, and we even have a working model so students can practice putting up a wall log, a ridgepole and a set of rafters using pulley blocks.  In our class we use continuous foundations, log rafters and log finishes.  We will show you the tree cutting window to avoid insect infestations in your logs, bruprestids beetles have been known to live and eat for 50 yrs before emerging from log buildings.  If you are thinking of building your own log building, it would be also helpful if you experienced a little log peeling, log lifting and putting in chinking so you knew what to expect. Please note that a graduate from a 2012 class will be building this spring and if you'd like to go out and help or watch the day after our class, you will be welcome.  He is located about an hour drive from us.  So far the furthest anyone has traveled to our class has been from France but we have one coming from Australia this May. We now also offer assistance in your construction, just pay our expenses and make a charitable contribution.  Some folks like to have us around for a couple days to put up the first logs. Our PowerPoint CD and 34 page booklet available for $60 which can be applied to the tuition cost. Please email or call (360-978-4962) if questions. I accept Paypal. THANKS.   Click here to know more about us: www.onalaskalogbuildingschool.com One of our prior students has started a blog webpage of his building experience, might help some folks.  www.logcabinfromscratch.com
