Ortho Tens Unit - For Back Pain or Any Muscle Pain I got this from PT Doc after I hurt my back in 2009.  I opened it up, turned it on to make sure it worked and never used it.  I put new batteries and tested to make sure it works for this sale so it's technically never used, just tested. Electro-Therapy Overview There are several electro-therapy modalities available to meet the various needs of your patients. Not all devices produce the same results, nor do all individuals respond the same way to all electro-therapies. Below you will find descriptions of the various devices and modalities in laymen's terms. Understanding the differences and what each can accomplish will help you best counsel your patients to help them navigate their way to the best possible solution.   TENS T.E.N.S. is an abbreviation for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Transcutaneous (trans-kyoo-tey-nee-uh s) means "through, or by way of the skin." TENS sends electrical impulses via electrodes or conductive garments to occupy the nerve pathways with a more comfortable sensation which overrides the pain. More specifically, according to Wikipedia, the high and low frequencies of TENS activate receptors in the spinal cord and the medulla. Further, high frequency TENS reduces excitation of central neurons that transmit nociceptive (pain) information, reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters and increases the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters (GABA) in the spinal cord, and activates the main "end" receptors centrally resulting in the blockage of pain. Low frequency TENS also releases serotonin and activates serotonin receptors in the spinal cord, releases GABA, and activates the main end receptors to reduce excitability of nociceptive neurons in the spinal cord.
