WHAT IS COMPOSTING? Composting is an aerobic biological process by which microorganisms act on rapidly biodegradable material (crop residues, animal dung and urban waste), to obtain "compost", an excellent fertilizer for agriculture. Compost or humus can be defined as the result of a process of humification of organic matter under controlled conditions and in the absence of soil.
