The Galgo Espanol (or Spanish greyhound) is an ancient breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family.  Despite being called a ‘greyhound’, the Spanish Galgo is not closely related to the English Greyhound, the lineages of the two breeds being different. Every year at the end of the hunting season 50,000 galgos are disposed of, many brutally. Methods of disposal by the galgueros (hunters) include being hung, thrown down wells, shot, poisoned, burned alive, having a stick wedged in their mouth so they die of hunger/thirst, or ending up in perreras – also known as the killing stations. Through the actions of volunteers in Spain and the rescue associations some galgueros have learnt that their ‘disposable’ dogs can be homed and will take them to a shelter. The refuges in Spain are dedicated and work incredibly hard to help these dogs with negligible support from the authorities.  Many galgos are adopted out of Spain in Europe as well as further afield, most Spaniards unfortunately view these beautiful, serene, elegant dogs simply as rats, nothing more than vermin   There was an article on Pepis recently in Dog World, this is an extract from it,  “Words can’t describe how awful this is,” said a spokesman for Pepis Refuge. “Sometimes they are clubbed to death or a metal pole forced into their mouths so they die of hunger and thirst, or they are thrown into wells. The typical look of a Galgo here is a dog with its head down, anxious eyes, trying to be faithful and afraid to be beaten. Many Spanish believe the dog has no soul because they have not been baptised, but does this mean cruelty is acceptable?” The terrible fate awaiting many Galgos in Spain is being tackled by Alan and Jane Brian, of Pepis Refuge. They had no intention of starting a shelter but after finding a dog hanging from a tree on their land they decided they would do what they could to help Pepis Dog Refuge is dedicated to providing a safe, caring, loving environment for the abandoned and ill treated dogs in Seville, Spain Registered Charity No. 13996 - C.I.F.
