I will tell you about my experience with this meter... I see them listed here so frequently, but none of the, have the PHA/SCA circuit, which is what makes the counter useful. This one had a neutron ball on it. It was easy to use. I never realized it was a fully functioning, very interesting single channel spectrum analyzer with a bunch of other nice user controls until the neutron ball came off and the meter went in to the disposition pile. This is not an easy meter to use; but it certainly is simple. It takes hours to learn how to tune it up well, but once you learn, it's like a revelation... Suddenly, you realize why these meters exist. Admittedly, the ASP-2 was just a mistake. It shouldn't have been built. It is ridiculously inconvenient for use as anything but a neutron counter. You can technically use those with any probe if you pay nearly a thousand dollars for the accessories to do so, but they are just horrible. Sort of like the ESP-1 and ESP-2 meters, you're probably going to like one or the other. I use an ESP-1 in my practice on occasion. It's a preference thing. But the ASP and ESP are very different meters altogether! Anyway, back to the meter for sale: This is not a meter than an easily frustrated amateur should buy. I know many talented tinkerers (all-c, I'm talking to you!) who would find this to be one of the finest meters in their collection. Frankly, it's just difficult to figure out how to use. In two hours of tinkering, I was able to get the meter to analyze with ease; recognizing only Cs137, Co60, Am-241 (plutonium falls in to that category as well), and various other isotopes very quickly. The click divider, dead time, calibration mode, and a couple of other features are DIP switches on the left side and back of the meter. The meter is not one which requires calibration per se, but it has a 5 volt adjustment pot, so the low voltage circuitry can be altered depending on what the meter is being used for. On the right side, we have the pulse height detector/spectrum analyzer. It has the net/gross switch, and window pot on the optional PHA board. It has threshold and gain pots which are used to tune it to a specific energy detection. I used a 2x2.5 inch probe, and it worked great. The discriminator is very sensitive, and can be used to eliminate noise or to hone in on a single isotope. I don't usually deal with these meters because I just don't like them, but this one does work perfectly, tests perfectly, and works well. When in the calibration mode, the pulse generator was spot on fron 100-100,000 CPM, and stayed linear when it was tuned down and tested fine up to 1 million as well. as well. It's a very useful meter for advanced hobbyists or nuke workers who are familiar with it. It can be easily tunes for very accurate dosimetry with any probe that has known specs, like the HP-270. That probe counts at 1,250CPM/mR/hour of Cs137, so any Cs137 source of known activity can be used to tune it up. It can be used as a regular Geiger counter; and does just fine with pancake probes, gas proportional probes, and especially with scintillators. It seems to work better when using a medium energy gamma probe. This is just great for a homebrew probe project, or is you need a stationary meter to hook up wot a well probe to measure specific isotopes. Because of the sheer complicated nature of this meter, I will only accept returns if it is not as described. I'm saying that a lot of folks might think this meter is defective, when it is actually just abnormally complex. I'm a small time seller who doesn't make money on this stuff, I just really like doing what I do. Returns break me, so I'm having to change my own selling rules and I don't like that. In fact, since eBay no longer allows me to sell my extremely hot rocks, my sales are virtually dead. That's what I get for selling the most radioactive rocks on eBay, I suppose! When the competition can destroy a business with one "report item" click, it isn't good. So please understand that I have to be so careful unless I want to stop selling equipment. I want to sell rocks (who else has autunite that will count at 850,000CPM without saturating an ordinary pancake probe??? Nobody!) I guess I can't blame the competition for pulling the reporting game. So please, ask any questions you have about this meter prior to purchase. I feel like a jerk for writing this. My customers are not idiots. Most are experimenters, and I actually keep in touch in a lot of cases. But, considering that 5 out of my last 12 items were returned under false pretenses (not knowing how to use the equipment, buyers remorse, and even two cases of vandalism to justify returns, I have to put this down. I'm pricing this meter at half of what is should be. The light and speaker work, it has a handle clip for a 44-21 probe or 44-3. It's awesome, but it takes some patience to get it to work. So, it works perfectly, but I am selling it as is for parts only. Ridiculous. Sorry about that! Enjoy, and feel free to take a chance!
