Had this thing for many years and never even tried to use it until recently. I put a new 9v battery in the probe (reciever) and a 9volt battery pack (6 AA batts) in the transmitter (replaced the original large 9v batt) and it seems to work great. I'm not ever sure it was ever used up untill now. It functions exactly as describe in the included directions, couldn' t believe it. How many times I could have use this over the years and didn't really understand what it was or how it worked. Just place the transmitter on the ground over where you think the cable or pipe is buried and the probe will pick it up anywhere along its length. I tested it on the cable TV wire and the electric service wires around my house and it worked great. My days of digging are over and was hoping somebody might want an affordable locator or just want a cool vintage tool. Not sure if it will work on PVC, but definitely on anything with some kind of metal in it.
