Now you can buy a portable hive scale based on the design by Tom Rearick of beehacker.com capable of weighing beehives up to 220 pounds. Built out of solid hickory for stiffness and durability, this hive scale has been sanded, stained and finished with two coats of satin polyurethane for a beautiful and long lasting finish. The scale is 6 inches wide, 31 inches long, about 6 inches in height and weighs six and a half pounds. The electronic scale has a large LCD digital display that can be read in bright sunlight and a blue backlight function to read the display in the dark. The electronic scale has a capacity of 50 kilograms or 110 pounds. To use this scale you need a 1/8 inch space under the hive bottom board about 7 inches long to allow insertion of the scale. You can create this 1/8 inch space by inserting shims between the bottom board and the hive stand or by notching the hive bottom board. The scale is inserted into the 1/8 inch space, the electronic scale turned on and the lever depressed. When you depress the lever you pry up one side of the hive. The scale will give you a weight in pounds or kilograms. You multiply the weight read on the scale by 1.87 to get the weight of the hive. Once you set up all your hives with the required space for insertion of the scale, it only takes a few minutes to weigh a dozen hives with this portable hive scale.
