The UV index and UV Irradiance is calculated by averaging the various UV-A and UV-B wavelengths according to the Erythemal Action Spectrum. UV flashlights, UV lamps and other lights that you may have in your classroom emit only one UV frequency; therefore, your UV meter will not give an accurate reading. 2. For consistent and accurate readings, the direction of the UV meter must be oriented so that the UV sensor points directly toward the sunlight. 3. If using glass in an experiment, please note that UV-B cannot go through glass, so the meter cannot get a reading through glass and will just register a zero.
