This is a white flake formulation of 90% KOH and the balance H20 by weight. When pure KOH is exposed to the air it is naturally hygroscopic, which is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment. This is achieved through either absorption or adsorption with the absorbing or adsorbing material becoming physically changed somewhat, by an increase in volume, stickiness, or other physical characteristic of the material, as water molecules become suspended between the material's molecules in the process. KOH is so hygroscopic that they readily dissolve in the water they absorb: this property is called deliquescence. So the fact that this is 90% by weight pure (technical grade) is not a bad thing since usully one would dissolve it in water anyway. Reagent grade KOH has to be stored so air-tight that once you break seal, it quickly becomes "technical" KOH. Potassium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula KOH, commonly called caustic potash. KOH is highly basic, forming strongly alkaline solutions in water and other polar solvents. These solutions are capable of deprotonating many acids, even weak ones. In analytical chemistry, titrations using solutions of KOH are used to assay acids. Aqueous potassium hydroxide is employed as the electrolyte in alkaline batteries based on nickel-cadmium, nickel-hydrogen, and manganese dioxide-zinc. Potassium hydroxide is preferred over sodium hydroxide because its solutions are more conductive. Mw = 56.11 g/mol.
