Quill and Spindle assembly with Jacobs chuck for a vintage Delta 17" drill press. I bought this as spare parts but now have whole spare drill presses. I have restored a couple of these and this assembly seems to me to be in serviceable condition. It could certainly benefit from cleaning and probably the bearings should be changed but that said it turns quite smoothly likely due to lots of old grease inside and and a lack of gritty dirt or other contamination. As you can see this has the Jacobs Taper spindle nose instead of the extended Morse taper that is seen on these more often. For those of us fixing these up for mainly woodworking in non industrial settings the JT nose is the more desirable, not requiring any adapter with a normal chuck to use regular drill bits. So here you have the whole assembly from the upper part of the spindle (no nut on top) to a Jacobs chuck that seems in decent condition. As seen in the photos there are some marks from some hard use or other on the end of the chuck but the jaws themselves do not seem badly worn. You can turn the chuck by hand but is somewhat stiff from general dirtiness I think. There is no damage I can see to the teeth on the outside of the quill. With this whole assembly one could keep an original quill with the Morse, if desired and change out the whole thing as described in the original manuals for these drills
