If you currently grind and, when finished the metal is discolored, then the metal is losing some of its temper which makes it more likely to break. Wheels made of Ceramic inherently generate less heat, but you also have to consider the hardness of the wheel and if the wheel is a porous structure (open structure). This particular wheel is a "J" hardness which was a little hard for my tastes I prefer an H or an I hardness. The harder the wheel the longer it will last, the material Aluminum Oxide/Ceramic etc plays a roll too but hardness is the best general gauge for longevity versus cooler/faster cutting. This particular wheel is not a porous open structure wheel so it will grind hotter than an equivalent open structure porous wheel but it will also last longer. The game with grinding wheels is a battle between maintaining the integrity of what you are grinding and the longevity of your grinding wheel. Since Grinding metal is an art it is impossible for anyone to recommend exactly which grinding wheel to use so there is a trial and error process of trying various grinding wheels.
