Only have 3 prong electric range and 3 prong electric clothes dryer outlets at your house, you're not sure which one will power your new machine best and don't want to pay hundreds of dollars to have a welding machine outlet installed? Here is my special non-NEMA 10-50P and 10-30P to 6-50R plug adaptor. It allows you to plug in a welding machine or plasma cutter into a 3 prong electric range OR clothes dryer receptacle. The cord is almost 4 feet long, the lines are both 10ga and the ground is also 10ga, that makes it a "3/10ga" cord. Pictures: The first and second picture are examples of the item. Picture 3 is the two kinds of 3 prong power outlet you will find installed in a house that is made before 1996 (outlets not included, they are attached to a wall, sorry). Pictures 4 and 5 show the adaptor plug going into a 30 amp clothes dryer receptacle. Picture 6 shows the plug going into a 50 amp range receptacle. The metal housing to the plug is ground. It is only intended for indoor use in dry locations. Do not use NEMA 6-50 series on machines that use line to neutral/ground power for lights or fans. Do not use this adaptor on anyting that uses line to neutral power like clothes dryer or electric range. Any machine like a welder or plasma cutter that came with a NEMA 6-50 cord from the factory does not use line to neutral/ground or otherwise use the 3rd prong to move any power unless there is a ground fault within the machine, so altering the clothes dryer "L-prong" for this type of application presents no foreseeable issues. The altered 3rd center prong does not carry any current unless there is a ground fault with the machine. Do not alter the 3rd prong on a machine that normally uses its 3rd prong to carry current for machine operation. All my smaller welding machines, plasma cutter and both of my 220v air compressors have clothes dryer cords modified like this, I have been doing it for a very long time. This cord adaptor is intended to be used on light and medium duty welding machines that came from the factory with a 10ga or smaller power cord installed or with machines that recommend 10ga or smaller (12, 14, 16 gauge) extension cords be used Such as a Lincoln 225-AC stick welder, mine came from the factory with a NEMA 6-50 plug on a 12ga cord. Do not use this to power a serious machine like a 250 amp dialarc. If you have a machine that does not appear to have its original cord and plug refer to the machines owners manual for minimum input power wire size. If you want to plug your welding machine into a clothes dryer outlet, because that's all you have and you flip your 30 amp clothes dryer breaker absolutely under no circumstances should you remove the 30 amp clothes dryer breaker and install a higher amp breaker. The circuit breaker is there to protect the wiring inside the walls. If your welding machine is flipping the breaker, that's because its doing its job and you need to turn the machine down or go find a real 50 amp circuit to plug into. Use this cord to power one machine at a time only, your welding machine is on a "duty cycle" so is this cord, the adaptor cord is on the same duty cycle as your machine. Here is an example of what not to do: Say you power one machine like a 225 amp stick welder running full power burn a few rods, it starts to get hot so while waiting for it to cool you pull the welders plug and plug in a big plasma cutter with out pause and run that full power too, that doesn't allow time for the cord to cool. Always cut power to the circuit and verify (by trying to turn the machine on) that power is actually off before plugging in or unplugging any 250 volt connection. Item has been tested. I plugged this adaptor into my testing rig and used it to power my clothes dryer (something you absolutely should not do) and air compressor, it had 25 amps flowing through it almost constantly then 35 amps flowing through it for a few minutes as the air compressor and dryer ran together, then tested the ground with a continuous 10 amps load to check for good continuity, the plug set showed no signs of heating up.
