The Rapid Toolmaker was designed for NASA by Sanders Design, the founding patent holders of Solidscape, to print high resolution patterns suitable for investment casting in precision aerospace applications. It jets a drop on demand thermoplastic material that pyrolizes cleanly without ash residue or thermal expansion . The Sanders RTM accolades include being named the grand winner at the NASA-sponsored “Technology 2007” Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, and winning the SBIR “Technology of the Year” Award from the Technology Utilization Foundation. The system has redundant optical encoders on the X-Y plane and look ahead logic that can be tailored for R&D applications from turbines to endoscopic instruments or fine jewelry applications. This limited production machine, which uses a multi-material process to produce delicate geometric features of net shape, is no longer being manufactured, however a full listing of service technicians, part vendors, and schematics are provided along with an inventory of spare parts/jets to allow for continued operations. A3DM Technologies, the original owner, is now focused on the DMLS process for precious metals and is divesting itself of this technology to make room for its new systems.
