There are a total of 220 pieces: a complete uppercase letter set, a complete lowercase letter set, a complete number set, 5 ligatures (ff, fi, fl, ffi, ffl), and some punctuation/special characters. The A’s are marked PAGE & CO. GREENVILLE CT. We believe this to be a very rare set of William Page & Company Gothic Treble Extra Condensed Class C wood type as found on p. 23 of the 1878 specimen book “Specimens of Wood Type Manufactured by the Wm. H. Page Wood Type Co.” It is a sans serif typeface. We believe this to be the first Page mark that was in use from 1857-1859. Page is credited with having designed many typefaces including the 1870 set of Aetna we currently have listed (we also have an 1859 Page set of Antique Tuscan listed – see our other listings to view the entire collection and the original type cabinet in which these sets were housed). As would be expected, the set overall exhibits wear appropriate with its age with individual pieces varying in condition, and some or all of them having some or all of the following: general wear, chips, scratches, nicks, dents, gouges, edge wear, dirty and/or stained areas, marks, discoloration, vestigial ink, adhered paper remnants on reverse, etc. (see pictures). A few of the pieces also have some large missing pieces of wood from the side areas. One of the Y's is also broken in half. We are unsure as to what type of wood the set is made from. The set weighs roughly 6 lbs 13 oz. This 220-piece 1857-1859 scarce antique set of 15-line 2.5" William Page & Company Gothic Treble Extra Condensed Class C letterpress wood type is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
