Up for auction is this very rare antique letterpress type initials partial set by the French foundry Fonderie Gustave Mayeur.  On page 72 of the Taschen reference book Type: A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles this type is identified as "Les Lettres Ecussonnees". As you can see in the photos, some do have damage to the type surface, particularly on some of the shield borders, but overall the type is in amazing functional condition for its age.  The photographs do a good job of capturing the detail, so please have a close look to be sure you are comfortable with the condition before you bid. As I recall, I had quite a bidding duel with a French gentleman on this set, and he has the letters I'm missing.  My collection includes the following letters: B, C, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, U, V, W, X, Y, as well as the background shield.
