This was recently acquired from the estate of a 92 year old woman who said she did not know much about it but that it was very old and it was her deceased husbands. She did remember he one time mentioned that his grandfather had been a printer out West during the late 1800's. It does have writing on the wood in pencil that seems to say "For Wild West Show Broadside very ?? old??." Her husband was a mechanic on P-38 Lightning Fighter Planes in WWII, we sold some of his WWII memorabilia last month. DESCRIPTION. Beautifully detailed large Copper & Wood Advertising Printing Plate Measuring about 8.75 X 6.75 inches, and about 1.00 inch thick. Image is of a American Buffalo or Bison in full gallop with his head and horns lowered. Attached to his head is a plate with a pole attached to it that streams a "Banner" that spans the entire back of the Buffalo and attached to his Tail where it is attached with streaming ribbons. The "Banner" is hollow to allow for the Printer to print probably the name of the Show. There is also a large "square" in the center of the Buffalo. There are detailed Ribbons and a large Tassel decorating the bottom edge of the square and elaborate floral and geometric designs at the top right of the square where the Buffalo "Hump" is. This is another area where Printing would appear, possibly Location of the Show, Dates, etc. Beneath the animal is Prairie grass ? and other plants. The body of the Buffalo is covered with finely detailed hair, eyes, horns, nose, hoofs, etc. FROM THE INTERNET. Copper Plate Engraving - Definition. Traditionally pictures were printed from copper plates. A highly skilled craftsman would engrave a flattened and polished copper plate with extremely sharp tools, which would then be inked and pressed onto paper to produce an image. This process is often called Line Engraving, as essentially the engraver can only engrave lines into the plate, so any shading in the final picture is achieved by either making the lines very close together or by crosshatching, which is basically producing a grid pattern on the copper - which when printed onto the paper gives a dark area, the closer the lines the darker the look. Copper is a relatively soft metal, so reasonable intricate patterns and lines can be engraved into it, however the downside of this is that each pressing of the plate causes it to flatten ever so slightly, which over time wears out the plate. Consequently in an era long before limited edition prints were even thought of, there was in fact a built in limitation to the number of prints that could be produced from a plate before it wore out. For this reason, once steel began to become readily available thanks to the Industrial Revolution it was used instead of copper to make printing plates as many more prints could be made from the plate, making it much more economic to use. Copper engravings tend to be preferred by aficionados and connoisseurs as the finished print appears softer and more subtle, indeed copper engravings are easily distinguished from their steel counterparts which have a much harder look to them.
