Take the Mystery out of the Mechanical Room The cheapest part of any hot water heating system is the PEX used to direct the flow of the hot water. It will likely be covered up with concrete or hidden under heat transfer plates, insulation, drywall and expensive final room finishes. Once installed it will not be serviceable. Because of the ready availability of PEX products imported from China and buyer confusion, the cheapest, and least serviceable part of your new hot water heating system may be a target for unwise cost cutting. There are (3) types of oxygen barrier (a.k.a. O2) PEX. 1) PEXa- always manufactured in the U.S. PEXa comes with a 25 yr. warranty by that U.S. Corporation 2) PEXb- Always manufactured in China. eBay and website listings may state a 25 yr. warranty but the stated warranty is with a Chinese companywhich may or may not be producing PEX next week. 3) PEXc- Always manufactured in China with the same warranties as PEXb. PEXb and PEXc are purchased by US resellers in full ship containers. Those containers are then broken down and the PEX is resold, often on eBay.
