500 "Stop FOD" Stickers In manufacturing and aviation, the acronym “FOD” is used to describe “foreign object debris.” The term includes any type of foreign object, particle, debris or agent in the manufacturing environment which could contaminate the product or otherwise undermine quality control standards. In situations where this type of debris has compromised the quality, functionality or economic value of a manufactured item, “FOD” can be used as an acronym for “foreign object damage.” In today’s advanced aviation environments, a long list of substances could potentially trigger foreign object damage. Anything from flying rocks, sand and loose chunks of pavement to misplaced luggage, wayward birds and misplaced hardware and tools qualifies as foreign object debris. FOD can occur in a wide range of places, from the equipment manufacturing environment to the service hangar, airport terminal, and runway. Given that FOD costs the aviation industry an estimated $4 billion per year, prevention is a top priority. There are four pillars to FOD prevention: training, inspection, maintenance and coordination. Staff who are properly trained in FOD prevention best practices are an invaluable asset. Inspection of all equipment which could possibly be affected by FOD should take place daily, at scheduled intervals. Maintenance should aim to both prevent FOD as well as remove any existing FOD.
