SENECA WIRE & MFG CO. FOSTORIA, OHIO WOOD & METAL LETTERPRESS PRINTING BLOCK PORTUGUESE - Circa 1920's A Wonderful Piece of Wire Manufacturing History. For Seneca Wire's Products Sold In Portuguese Speaking Countries. Lead and/or Lead-Copper and/or Lead-Zinc and/or Lead-Tin-Antimony-Copper-Zinc based Letterpress Wooden Printing Block From an Private Print House or Catalog Printer c: 1922   NOTE: If you want to purchase a piece of advertising history, don't buy an image ripped out of some magazine or newspaper. Instead, buy the printing block that printed the actual image! Prior to the digital age, books, posters, tickets, forms, newspapers, and other types of printed paper were produced on a printing press. Movable type and wooden / metal printing blocks (also known as a letterpress cut or printing dies) were set in a frame (known as a chase) and ink was rolled over the surface of the metal image with a roller (also known as a brayer) before the paper was pressed into the inked surface. This process was known as relief printing which included woodcut, relief etching, linocut, linotype, and metal cut. <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> You are purchasing an extremely rare, image Trademarked printing block believed to have been used in a Private Printing House, Tag Printer or Catalog Printer's press to print the company's advertising or stationary. This block is astronomically rare - as it was manufactured for their product lines being sold in Portuguese speaking territories! This letterpress metal and wood printing block measures 0.92" deep by 1.97" high by 1.86" wide and weighs approximately 2.9 ounces (82 grams). This stamp is a professionally made, letterpress block used for printing. It shows some surface wear from being in the press. Based upon the other blocks within the group, our research and this block's composition, this block is believed to have been produced and used in the early 1920's - - -making it approximately 82 years old. Although you will be receiving the entire wood and metal printing block, the image you are looking at is a high-resolution image of just the block's metal printing surface (so that you can see the considerable detail). This printing block has a copper/zinc electroplated surface. Copper or zinc electroplating was added to the surface of lead blocks to keep the images sharp and to increase the number of impressions a block could produce before being "retired." We have chemically cleaned this block's surface to remove decades of tarnish, strip off residual inks and bring up the brilliant copper color. <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> ABOUT THE IMAGE: The image on this printing block WAS a registered Trademark of the Seneca Wire Company. The round circle at the top of the letterpress block is the end view of a coil of wire. The words and images are again surrounded again by a larger coil of wire. PORTUGUESE TO ENGLISH TRANSLATION: ARAME = WIRE, FERRO=IRON, QUALIDADE=QUALITY, SERVICO=SERVICE, ACO=STEEL and MARCA REGISTRADA=TRADEMARK. ABOUT THE SENECA WIRE COMPANY: The Seneca Wire & Manufacturing Company is located on South Vine Street in Fostoria, Ohio. It is the oldest tempered wire manufacturer in the United States and is amongst the oldest wire companies in North America. Seneca was incorporated and has been in continuous operation since 1905. The company has two wholly owned subsidiaries: Keystone-Seneca Wire Cloth Company in Brookhaven, Mississippi and FENIX, LLC in Wapakoneta, Ohio. The wire products produced by the Company are sold in North America and exported to over a dozen other countries. The company employs roughly 200 people at its three locations. Seneca continues to maintain its corporate offices in Fostoria. Seneca began carving its niche in high carbon and alloy oil tempered wires in the 1930’s - - - serving mechanical spring and wire forming customers in the automotive, agricultural, construction, and mining markets. It produces round wires, rolled and drawn flat, square, and shaped wire up to 3/4 ” in width composed of high carbon and alloy grades. (Research credit to the Seneca Wire & Manufacturing Company history). This extremely rare advertising printing block makes a perfect gift for yourself, your coffee or end table, on your desk at work, on a shelf, or in your collection. It also makes a fantastic gift (no one else is going to give this as a gift!). Given the advent of digital printing and the copyrighted nature of this image, the likelihood of ever finding another one of these metal & wood blocks - with this image - is slim at best. There is little doubt that friends who see it will pick it up and ask "Where did you ever find this unusual item?" This item can also be used for impressionning clay or ceramics prior to firing - as well as printing. NOTES ABOUT THE IMAGE SURFACE: Every time a die passes through the printing press, the pressure of the die's impression on the paper subtly degrades the surface of the plate/die/block. This block is believe to have printed tens of thousands of images - so its surface is slightly degraded. Please see the photo if you have any questions regarding the suitability of this block if you actually intend to use it for printing. IMAGE CORRECTION / ADJUSTMENT: One of this listing's photographs has been intentionally reversed. That image is a "mirrored image" so that you can see what the image would look like when it was printed (as well as read the text). The printing block you will receive will of course be reversed from what would be printed on the paper. DISCOUNTS: Effective July 2011, eBay started collecting an 11% surcharge on the amount buyers pay for postage. We have never "gouged" our buyers on postage or shipping -and- we have never charged a "handling fee." In fact, we usually "broke even" or lost a little money on shipping. Under eBay's new rules, if a seller's actual postage cost is $1.25, eBay now "dings" the seller a .14? (11%) "postage surcharge" resulting in another loss. Effective June 1, 2012, eBay terminated many seller's 20% "final value credit" because sellers were unable to meet eBay's shipping criteria of shipping within 24 hours (orders placed on Saturday afternoon couldn't possibly be shipped until at least Monday, etc.). Sellers counted on this small "refund" which added to the bottom line. As we could only guarantee 24-hour shipping 6-days a week, we lost this credit too. Inasmuch, WE DO NOT feel it's fair to pass eBay's surcharges along to our buyers - so we have simply removed the various discounts we previously offered our buyers. We sincerely apologize for this - - - however eBay left us with two choices: Increase your cost by passing along their surcharges or remove our discounts. We chose the latter.
