Sheffield Visual Gage Comparator #542 - "Shadowgraph" Precision Measuring Gage This is heavy duty and sturdy Sheffield #542 Shadowgraph Visual Gage Comparator. The electrical components all work - Lights up well. The needle responds well. The plug is missing the grounding tong. The paint on the body is worn and signs of use include scratching and etchings in the body from a previous owner.  Applications - Visual gage comparators are used to check external dimensions - width, thickness, height, depth, diameter, taper, out of round, angularity of surfaces and runout. Critical elements of screw threads may also be checked. The wide range of amplifications provides a means for checking master and production gages, for toolroom work, for receiving inspection functions, for process control and final inspection and for laboratory and research work. Sheffield Visual Gage Comparator: Performance Features Rugged ... No Wearing Parts - No gears, knife edges, levers, or rubbing contacts are employed, assuring trouble-free performance. During laboratory tests the reed mechanism showed no signs of wear. Instantaneous ... Easy To Read - The Visual Gage Shadow moves with the gaging spindle and is easily readable without eye strain. This feature, combined with accuracy and repeatability, is important in high volume inspection operations. Positive Spindle Action - The gaging spindle, like the reed mechanism, is mechanically positive and cannot produce gaging errors because both spindle and floating block move together. Spindle Fine Adjustment - The spindle is extended or retracted by manipulating the fine adjusting sleeve. This brings the scale reading to a fine zero setting.
