Offering today the following: Here is a unique piece that rarely comes to market. Most never escape the factory. This is the tip from a large silicon ingot which, once grown, is sliced and printed to make the silicon chips we use in all our everyday electronics. I've included this process description below as well as pictures from the internet of the completed ingot. There is also a YouTube link showing the process. I've had this piece a a couple of decades so this piece comes from the early days of semi-conduction production. You'll notice the piece still contains the factory markings from its manufacture. Due to the reflectivity of the surface, I've taken pictures with different backgrounds and lighting conditions. The surface is super shiny so any reflections or color variations are due to the surroundings, not the piece. While I am allowing BEST OFFERS, no low-ball offers please, this is a rarely found item! Process: To grow an ingot, the first step is to heat the silicon to 1420°C, above the melting point of silicon. Once the polycrystalline and dopant combination has been liquified, a single silicon crystal, the seed, is positioned on top of the melt, barely touching the surface. The seed has the same crystal orientation required in the finished ingot. Once the system reaches proper conditions for crystal growth, the seed crystal slowly lifts out of the melt. Growth begins with a rapid pulling of the seed crystal.
