A glass, black & white Magic Lantern Slide photographed and produced in the early 1900's! The photographic detail in this slide is nothing short of suburb! Item: Antique Magic Lantern Slide, Black & White, glass with paper edging. Topic: Wooden Silkworm Incubator, Japan Manufacture: Keystone View Company Slide No.: 536 (14746) Descriptive Card Included?: Absolutely! About This Particular Lantern Slide: We are thrilled to finally be able to offer our black and white, Japanese-related, magic lantern slides for sale! These slides mesmerized American audiences in the early 1900's who were fascinated by "The Orient." This listing is for the slide indicated. There are four stages in the life history of a silkworm. It is first an egg. This egg hatches into a worm. The worm becomes a chrysalis and the chrysalis changes into a moth. It is the second stage - that of the worm - that you see pictured here. In the fall, the parent moths are freed in a large room. They lay their eggs on sheets of white paper. These sheets are carefully kept n a cool place during the winter. In the spring, they are put in to the incubators where the eggs hatch in about ten days. In this picture, you can see one of these incubators, the white sheets of paper, the thermometer, and a man and woman tending to it. WHAT'S A MAGIC LANTERN SLIDE?: This Keystone Magic Lantern Slide is believed to have been taken at the turn of the 20th Century between 1892 and 1912 (although possibly later). The black & white glass slide was composed by the photographers of the Keystone View Company (whose factories were located in Meadville, Pennsylvania). Long before television was ever imagined, Magic Lantern Slides were used as an educational tool at American universities, schools, and local theaters. In America's more affluent homes, Magic Lantern Slides were a form of entertainment. In a era when steamboat, train, horseback, and the "Tin Lizzie" were the mode of transportation, these slides were used to captivate and enlighten audiences across the country and around the world. A high-resolution black & white "positive" was sandwiched between two plates of glass which were then bound with a passe-partout paper edging. Generally, the name of the Magic Lantern Slide company and a brief description of the image were also sandwiched between the glass plates. This slide was then inserted into a projector which was illuminated by a high-intensity, extremely hot Mazda lamp or carbon arc. ABOUT THIS SLIDE'S CONDITION: This slide is in extremely good condition - no cracks in the glass, discoloration, separation, and either very little or no damage to the slide's paper edging. Baring some dust and possibly a little dirt on the glass, it‘s in extremely good condition. NOTE: This slide has not been cleaned. Should you need to clean the slide, a little glass cleaner on a Q-tip swab works great (just avoid "wetting" the paper edges - also known as the passepartout binding). This slide measures 3 1/4" x 4". Included is its original factory 3 1/4" x 3 1/2" descriptive card explaining what is depicted - adding even more value to your investment. Photographic prints can be made from this slide at any custom photo lab. The image's photographic details are superb - especially under higher magnification. This historical item would make a fantastic gift to yourself, your local historical society, library, university, or someone involved the slide's topic. We've been advised by some buyers they simply placed their Magic Lantern Slide on a window ledge and let the sun shine through. Another buyer contacted us to let us know he'd incorporated a Magic Lantern Slide into one of his stained glass projects! Some organizations have used these magic lantern slides to produce historical photographic prints for their fund raising drives. GENERAL NOTE / DISCLAIMER: Due to the magic lantern slide's age, there may be some very minor damage to the paper edging of the slide (unless indicated otherwise), minor distortions of the film between the plates, and/or minor imperfections to the glass or film due to the considerable heat the magic lanterns generated in projecting the image. However, this magic lantern slide is still in extremely good condition. SHIPPING and HANDLING COST: There is no excessive "padding" with this item's S & H. INSURABLE?: eBay’s policy changed in 3rd Quarter 2009, (which previously allowed buyers the option of selecting and paying for coverage for their purchases). Thus, this item is not insurable. We don't make the policies, we simply have to try to keep up with them. As of this listing, we've not been advised of any Magic Lantern Slides having arrived damaged - even having shipped dozens of them worldwide. DISCOUNTS: Effective July 2011, eBay started collecting an 11% surcharge on the amount buyers pay for postage. We have never "gouged" our buyers on postage or shipping -and- we have never charged a "handling fee." In fact, we usually "broke even" or lost a little money on shipping. Under eBay's new rules, if a seller's actual postage cost is $1.25, eBay now "dings" the seller a .14? (11%) "postage surcharge" resulting in another loss. Effective June 1, 2012, eBay terminated many seller's 20% "final value credit" because sellers were unable to meet eBay's shipping criteria of shipping within 24 hours (orders placed on Saturday afternoon couldn't possibly be shipped until at least Monday, etc.). Sellers counted on this small "refund" which added to the bottom line. As we could only guarantee 24-hour shipping 6-days a week, we lost this credit too. Inasmuch, WE DO NOT feel it's fair to pass eBay's surcharges along to our buyers - so we have simply removed the various discounts we previously offered our buyers. We sincerely apologize for this - - - however eBay left us with two choices: Pass along their surcharges or remove our discounts. WARRANTY and/or RETURNS: This historical magic lantern slide is subject to individual interpretation. We have made every effort to list the information and condition as accurately as possible and the research is believed to be accurate: Thus, no warranty or returns on this item. HOW FAST IT'S GOING TO GET TO YOU: As soon as PayPal notifies us that your payment has been posted, your magic lantern slide will be packaged, labeled, and readied for shipping. Feel free to contact us to see if other arrangements can be made (we're pretty easy to get along with). SECURITY FEATURE: The listing's photograph contains a digital watermark to reduce fraud.
