Its CAS Number is 7790-28-5 and its linear formula is NaIO4 with a molecular weight of 213.89. This process is useful in labeling saccharides with fluorescent molecules or biotin tags. This article focuses on sodium periodate - a meta reagent with 99.5% purity in a 30g sample size. Composed of a sodium cation and the periodate anion, it is considered the sodium salt of periodic acid. It is also selectively used on RNA instead of DNA, as ribose has vicinal diols while deoxyribose does not. Sodium periodate has two forms - sodium metaperiodate and sodium orthoperiodate - both of which make it a useful oxidizing agent. Moreover, NaIO4 is used to cleave diols in organic chemistry to produce two aldehydes. In the field of chemistry, NaIO4 has the ability to open saccharide rings between vicinal diols, resulting in two aldehyde groups.
