They had to be, to climb into one of those crates, especially when flying into the stormy skies over France in WW1. Plywood, beech, ash and other hard woods were covered in fabric and doped to stiffness to create a ‘flying machine’, and out in front of the chugging engine sat one of these hand-carved wood beauties to pull the contraption through the sky.
