The item on offer is a Spencer monocular microscope, serial number 139135, which dates the instrument to 1937.  By comparison with a photograph in the Spencer catalog I believe this instrument is the research microscope No.  7 with Model N inclined monocular tube.  The optical components consist of three oculars, Spencer 6X and 10X and a Zeiss Mobini 15X, and four Spencer objectives: 5.3X NA 0.20, 10X NA 0.25, 45X NA 0.85, and 95X NA 1.25.  The condenser, on a rack and pinion mount, has a smoothly working iris diaphragm.  The microscope is fitted with an integrated mechanical stage with coaxial controls.  The mirror has a few minor streaks that do not compromise its functioning.  The fine and coarse focus motions are smooth, as are the mechanical stage motions.  Examination of the objectives with a hand lens reveals no obvious defects.  The cosmetic appearance of the microscope is good, noting wear to the finish commensurate with age.  The case for the microscope is mechanically sound, but rough on the exterior and missing both lock and key (see photos 10 and 11).  The microscope has not been tested and is sold as is.  The winning bidder will pay $40.00 for insured UPS Ground shipping in the continental US, actual cost elsewhere.  Payment by Paypal is preferred.
