For auction here is a used but remarkably clean Staco Variable Transformer Type 3PN501, also known as an Autotransformer or Variac, which is available due to workshop downsizing. In contrast to versions of this tool which don't have the 3rd pole (ground) at the output, this unit includes it in the form of the 5-15R style receptacle. Despite the proliferation of electronic controllers in today's marketplace there are times when an autotransformer provides valued straightforwardness and dependability. This tool is in perfect operating condition, and has been mainly used to control soldering irons. The switch is most commonly used in the 120V position, but can also be set to "OFF" and to a 140V position. Among other uses of that feature, it is a handy way of boosting the output voltage without changing the dial position. The knob controls the setting as a percentage of the voltage selected at the switch. There is a satisfying feel as the knob is turned, and it stays where it's put without worries. The unit can be used in any orientation provided the vents at the ends are not blocked. It is truly one of those "nothing-else-will-do" kind of tools!
