Staco Variac Type 501 & Vintage Weston 0-150 Vac Meter. Reform Elect Capacitors

US $680

This auction is for a custom-built Staco Variac-based Power Supply Unit for reforming (reconditioning) electrolytic capacitors in vintage radios, tube amplifiers, amateur radio equipment, and so on. The unit to be restored can be plugged into this power supply and the voltage slowly increased until full line voltage (~110V) is reached. This often allows the capacitors to regain their ability to handle full voltage, preventing them from failing immediately when powered up after a long period of dormancy.  Also, the variac transformer can deliver voltages beyond the line voltage for various other uses. This particular unit claims a range of 0V to 140V (AC). As you can see from the pictures, it will produce in excess 150V, which is where my courage failed and the Classic Weston Meter was pegged.  I have heard that some unscrupulous ham radio operators, in years past, have used this feature to over-power tube transmitters for improved performance, as well as providing heat for a cold radio "shacks." Anyway, I built this using a Staco Energy Products Heavy Duty Variac. This unit has its own motor attached to it, allowing remote control as in stage lighting management. I preferred to use the big knob for the "Dr. Frankenstein" satisfaction it provides. To further this goal, I mounted a Vintage "Westin Alternating Current" Voltmeter to monitor output. This meter can provide 3 ranges 0-3V, 0-15V & 0-150V depending on how it is hooked up. Finally a gas-filled removable indicator light is plugged into the outlet to show relative power output, and also as a visual reminder to reduce the likelihood of premature death through electrocution* *Please note that this is an open unit with easy access to lethal voltages. If you, or others with access) do not have the skills to operate this safely, then do not use it. If in doubt, or if children are around, then build an enclosure to protect yourself and others. Please look at all of the photographs for details. No reserve auction - good luck!
This is a custom-built instrument using a combination of used industrial and vintage parts.
