A unique sensor in the tail patch registers the number of standing mounts a cow has accepted and, through a series of lights built in, indicates the time frame they were accepted in. The sensor unit is reusable and highly durable. *Includes: TattleTale Time-Mount Heat Detector, 1 - Patch, 2 - 3.0V Batteries for Approx. 150 Hours of Usage* Step #1 Remove the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector from the wrapping. Pull the plastic ribbon from the left side of the device and discard. Step #2 Click the Mount Button 5 times. The Reset Routine should activate. Each light should light, beginning with light #1 and ascending to light #12. Twice. (If the device does not activate, wait 5 seconds and try again. The Reset Routine is carefully timed to avoid accidental resets. It is timed to be clicked 5 times, much like double clicking the mouse on a computer.) Step #3 After the device resets, remove the plastic ribbon from the right side of the device. Step #4 Insert the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector into the clear vinyl pouch. Be sure the button end of the heat detector fits into the clear, vacuum-formed button on the clear vinyl pouch. To prevent glue from getting on the plastic housing of the detector, make sure the fabric on the button-end covers the end of the device on the bottom. Step #5 Reset the device again with 5 clicks to make sure the button is free in the vinyl pouch. Step #6 Prepare the tail head of the cow by combing it with a curry comb. Make sure the tail head is free of debris. (Do not shave the cow, since the adhesive works well in the hair. Note: During the spring when the cow is losing more hair be sure all the loose hair is combed away.) Step #7 Using a small hand trowel to spread the glue, apply a thin layer of adhesive to the patch. By completely covering the patch with a thin layer of glue the heat detector will adhere much better to the cow. Step #8 Affix the patch to the tail head of the cow with the button-end of the heat detector closest to the tail and firmly press the entire patch to the cow hide. Step #9 Monitor the cow’s mounting activity at each milking and check the patch to be sure a good glue bond is maintained. Periodically reset the detector to be sure the device is working properly.   OPERATION A. Timing The device has 12 lights (light emitting diodes) - one light for each hour. It displays the hours with Long Blinks. Once the cow accepts the first 3-second standing mount, this extremely accurate timer activates and displays light #1. Light #1 will blink one Long Blink. At precisely 1 hour and 1 second after the timer activates, light #2 will also begin to display with a Long Blink. At 2 hours and 1 second light #3 will begin to display with a Long Blink, and so on, until all 12 lights display or the device is reset, whichever comes first. By counting the number of lights that are displaying Long Blinks you’ll know in what hour the cow is in standing heat. (If for example, you see 9 lights with Long Blinks the cow is in her ninth hour of standing heat.) Xxxxxxxxxxxxx first mount to 1 hour xXxxxxxxxxxxx 1 hour 1 second - 2 hours  xxXxxxxxxxxxx 2 hours 1 second - 3 hours The advantage of using light emitting diodes or (LEDs), rather than a digital display is simple and practical. Microdyne’s TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector continually conveys information by a rotation of blinking lights, so the user can read vital information at a distance. Once you’ve learned how to read the information being displayed, you’ll know the cow’s precise mounting activity from several yards away. This should make your job of detecting heats and timing your inseminations much easier than before. Most often we read time in a circle or circularly. Imagine taking an ordinary wall clock and flattening it out into a straight line. That is what we have done with the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector. So, instead of reading time circularly we read time in a line. There are two important advantages of using this linear display of time. You can accurately read a linear display of time from several yards away. Also, since the tailhead of the cow is narrow, the device itself is designed narrow utilizing this display of time, which gives the device a greater chance of staying on the cow through the standing-mount activity. B. Mounting Activity The standing-mount activity of the cow is displayed by Short Blinks. By counting the number of short blinks in each hour you will know the exact number of times the cow stood for 3-second standing mounts in each hour. This information is continually displayed in rotation. By doing this, the breeder has a constant display of raw data of the cow’s standing-mount activity. You will know exactly how many times she stood for a 3-second mount in each hour and if there was a lull or a peak in her standing-mount activity. C. 12-Hour Breed Alert At exactly 12 hours after the first 3-second standing mount, the device will begin flashing from light #1 to light #12 for 15 seconds. We call this the 12-hour Breed Alert. The device flashes to let you know that a complete 12 hours has passed since the cow first stood for a 3-second mount. It then reverts back to displaying the 12 hours of mounting activity and repeats the 12-hour Breed Alert. This rotation will repeat until the device is reset. FEATURES 1. The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector displays every 3-second standing mount in a 12-hour period and lets you know in what hour each mount occurred. 2. The flashing lights (light emitting diodes) are extremely visible and can easily be read from several yards away. 3. The 12-hour Breed Alert lets you know when exactly 12 hours have passed since the cow stood for the first standing-mount. 4. Time is read in a line (linear), so you can read the time that mounting activity took place from a greater distance. 5. The electronics are coated with a water resistant coating to help withstand wet weather. (Even though the device has a water resistant coating, do not allow the TattleTale™ Timed Mount Heat Detector to be exposed to wet weather outside of the vinyl patch.) 6. The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector needs to have the Mount Button pressed for a full 3 seconds to count the activity as a legitimate standing mount. This helps eliminate false positives. 7. The device is programmed with a 5-second delay before it will accept another mount. This helps prevent false positives by recording only one standing mount per incident. 8. The 12-hour timer is extremely accurate. 9. The polycarbonate case is rugged enough to endure the weight of the mounting cow. 10. Playback - The device automatically stores in memory the 3 most recent series of mounting activity (up to 3 12-hour series) and can easily be played back for reference. If your timing of the first service was unsuccessful use playback to help you make a decision on the second service. If the second service is also unsuccessful you can playback the history of the first two mounting series to determine a better time for the third service. You may even want to dedicate a device to each cow, so her mounting history can be played back for a reference at her next lactation. 11. The device is reusable and the batteries can be easily replaced. 12. Memory is not lost when the batteries are replaced. 13. The 5-click Reset Routine is simple to do and helps prevent accidental resets. It also allows you to see that every light is working properly. 14. The device is narrow, which gives it a greater chance of enduring the mounting activity without falling off the cow. 15. The vinyl patch helps protect the device from adverse weather. 16. Low battery signal - light #1 will begin to flash less light as the batteries begin to loose power to let you know when the batteries need to be replaced. 17. The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector will clearly show you the peak standing-mount period of each cow. READING THE DISPLAY LIGHTS 5-Click Reset Routine The 5-click Reset Routine is a simple routine of flashes that let you know that each light (light emitting diode) is working and the device is active. By clicking the Mount Button 5 times, the Reset Routine will begin. Each light will flash beginning at light #1 and ascending to light #12 twice. Long Blinks - Short Blinks Remember - Long Blinks designate the hour and Short Blinks designate the mounts. At the first standing mount light #1 will begin to blink. It will blink one long blink for the hour and one short blink for the standing mount. The device is telling you that hour 1 is being recorded and one mount has taken place. If the cow accepts another mount in that hour the device will blink one long blink (designating the hour) and two short blinks designating both mounts. Theoretically, the device can count up to 255 mounts in each hour, but we know that will never happen. If it did happen the first hour, light #1 would blink one long blink and 255 short blinks. After the completion of 1 hour, light #2 will also begin to blink with one long blink. There is one light for each of the twelve hours. If the cow mounts in hour 2, the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector will display that mount with a short blink on light #2. After the second hour is complete, and remember the timer is extremely accurate, then light #3 will begin to blink one long blink. And so on until all twelve hours are displayed, recorded and stored. Example - If the cow comes to the barn and the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector is blinking one long blink on light #1 and one short blink, then blinks one long blink on light #2 and two short blinks, then one long blink on light #3 and four short blinks, this is what the device is telling you. First, the device is telling you that the cow is in her third hour of standing heat. You know this because hour 3 is now being recorded. It’s also letting you know that in hour 1 the cow stood once for a 3-second standing mount. In hour 2 the cow stood for two 3-second standing mounts. In hour 3 she has already stood for four 3-second standing mounts, but she may stand for more, since the third hour is not yet complete. By counting the total number of short blinks you know that the cow stood for a total of 7 mounts in less than a three hour period. With this type of display you will be able to see, not only when the first standing mount took place, but also know the peak mounting period. In the case of the example, you know the cow is accelerating in mounting activity. If you want to inseminate the cow a full twelve hours after the first standing mount, the device will begin displaying an unmistakable 12-Hour Breed Alert at exactly the completion of the full twelve hours. The 12-hour display of mounting activity and the 12-Hour Breed Alert will repeat until the device is reset. When you choose to inseminate is entirely up to you. The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector has simply provided you with the raw data of the cow’s standing-mount activity. You, as the breeder, still need to determine when to inseminate, but now you’ll have extra vital information to help you with that decision. The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector is a simple and extremely accurate raw-data device that you can use however best fits your operation and practices. The batteries should provide approximately 150 hours of continual run-time. Run-time is only the time when the device is actually blinking. So, the cost of letting the device run is minimal. As the batteries begin to lose power light #1 will begin to blink less bright. When you see this begin to happen it time to replace batteries. Low Battery Flash The Low Battery Flash is dedicated to light #1. When the strength of the batteries begins to dissipate light #1 will become less bright . So, for example, when the 5-click Reset Routine is played, if light #1 flashes less brightly than lights #2 through #12 you know the batteries are beginning to lose power and need to be replaced. On average the batteries should provide approximately 150 hours of run-time. Run-time is only when the timer has been activated and the lights are blinking. Cold weather may shorten the operation time of the batteries. However, the heat from the cow helps to keep the batteries warm. Playback Flash The Playback Flash is a five-second flash on light #1,#2, or #3, depending on which playback event you are about to see. (See HOW TO PLAYBACK AND READ MEMORY section for more detail)   HOW TO PLAYBACK AND READ MEMORY How to read the latest series of mounting activity in memory- Series #1 The TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector is designed to record up to three 12-hour mounting series. It does this automatically. When a fourth series is introduced it simply erases the oldest series. Lets say the device is reset and showing no activity but you want to know how many times and when she stood on her last series of mounts. Simply click the Mount Button 5 times and activate the Reset Routine. The Reset Routine is ascending flashes of lights #1 through #12 - twice. While the detector is performing the Reset Routine press the Mount Button one more time. Light #1 will light up for 5 seconds and then play back the most recent series of mounting activity. This can be up to a twelve hour series, however the length of the original series recorded by the device will determine the playback information. If the device operated 8 hours and the device was reset, the playback will display 8 hours of activity. This display will repeat in playback until the device is reset. If you want to see the mounting Series #2 simply reset the detector with 5 clicks on the Mount Button and while it’s performing the Reset Routine press the Mount Button two more times. Light #2 will then light up for 5 seconds and playback series #2 until the device is reset again. To see the oldest series of mounting activity, Series #3 Reset the device by clicking the Mount Button 5 times and while it’s performing the Reset Routine press the Mount Button three more times. Light #3 will then light up for 5 seconds and then series #3 (the oldest series) will begin playback and repeat until the device is reset. You know which series (1,2 or 3) you’re playing back by which light lights for 5 seconds at the beginning of this function. The Playback feature should be very beneficial, especially in helping you determine when to inseminate hard-to-detect cows or cows not settled on the first or second service. You may choose to modify the timing of your insemination. Since changing batteries will not erase the memory of the TattleTale™ Timed-Mount Heat Detector, you can dedicate a detector to each cow so you will have each cow’s mounting history for the next lactation. When the cow is culled, simply re-dedicate the detector to another cow. (It’s recommended you erase the culled cow’s history to avoid any confusion. This can be done simply by resetting and then starting the 12-hour timer 3 times. This will record ones in each history bank.) If a Tattletale Timed-Mount Heat Detector (TM) is dedicated to a cow, print the cow’s number on the device and REMOVE the batteries until the next lactation to prevent corrosion. You will not lose the memory in the processor by removing the batteries. PRECAUTIONS Keep the device dry. Although the electronic board has a protective water resistant coating, getting the circuit board wet is damaging to the device. It’s especially damaging to the battery holders and switch, which are not coated in order to have the best connections possible. Avoid accidentally putting the device in the playback mode. To reset, press the mount button 5 times. If you press the mount button 6, 7 or 8 times the device will automatically go into playback mode. If the device is accidentally put in playback mode, simply wait 5 seconds and press the mount button 5 times, much like double-clicking the mouse on a computer, and reset the device. When working with heifers you may need to use an anti-lick solution on the outside of the patch and vinyl bubble to keep the unit from being bothered, as heifers are curious. IMPORTANT Make sure the screws on the bottom of the case are NOT over tightened. Over tighten screws can cause the switch to malfunction. When putting the case together after replacing batteries, be sure to insert the screw on the button end first. Then, insert the screw on the opposite end. And finally insert the screw in the middle. The case will fit together much easier if you insert the screws in this order. *********************************************************************************************************************************************** We pride ourselves in our Customer Service Feel free to ask questions prior to your purchase.  We combine Shipping on Any/All purchases, and try to keep our Prices very competitive.
