AFA 500 Specifications: The AFA 500 is the most basic TEL fume hood monitor. It has a green safe light for normal airflow conditions and a red light and horn for alarm conditions. It requires a simple, single-point calibration via a pushbutton process. While most factory installations are semi-flush mounted, HSE provides a surface mounting box to simplify field retrofit installations. An air hose is connected to the on-board flow sensor, with the other end connected to a hole in the side wall of the fume hood. The monitor has an independent power supply, usually plugged in to a box on top of the hood and hidden from view in the lab. The sensor range is 30 to 400 fpm, with an accuracy of +/- 5 percent. The alarm point is established as part of the calibration process, i.e., the monitor is calibrated at the desired alarm point as measured with an anemometer. The sensor is not pre-calibrated and must be calibrated on site to allow for altitude and pressure variations in any given laboratory. The AFA 500 has a low-air relay (volt free, dry contact) that will send a signal during an alarm condition. It also has two input relays, one for the optional sash high alarm and another for the optional night setback feature. The sash high feature requires purchase and installation of a proximity sensor or micro switch; night setback requires an electrical connection from a building management system or other external source (fan switch, light switch) to activate the mode, in which the audible alarm is muted until the night setback condition ends. This feature is useful for labs that are shut off (switched to “unoccupied”) at the end of the day or hoods that are rarely used, such as those in middle school and high school science classrooms. An AFA 500 can be connected to a computer, but only to view the parameter settings through TEL’s configuration manager.
