CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ Polyethylene Glycols CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs are available in average molecular weights ranging from 300 to 8000 in a variety of viscosities and physical forms. CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs meet all applicable requirements in the National Formulary (NF) for use in drug applications, Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) requirements for use in certain food applications and personal care products. Chemical Intermediates The primary hydroxyl functionality of CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs allows reactions typical of alcohols, such as conversion of a functional alcohol group to esters, ethers, amines and acetals. CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ MPEGs have one primary hydroxyl group and can be used to prepare high purity monoesters. All CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs and MPEGs meet the requirements necessary to produce the highest quality fatty acid esters. Esters based on PEGs provide valuable surface active properties. They are classed as nonionic surfactants and are not affected by acids or hard water, an advantage over anionic or cationic soaps. These characteristics have been found valuable in the textile, agricultural, paper, personal care and cosmetics industries. In addition to fatty acids and fatty acid esters, numerous other compounds can be reacted with polyethylene glycols, including diethyl sulfate, alkyl halides, aryl halides containing nitro groups, and isocyanates. Reaction of PEGs with isocyanates results in the formation of polyurethane polymers. Food Processing and Packaging CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ Polyethylene Glycols are produced to meet the requirements of the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) monograph for direct and indirect use in a variety of food-related applications. Food additive clearances are listed in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Personal Care and Cosmetics CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs and MPEGs are used in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care preparations including creams, lotions, sticks, cakes, powders, gels and aerosols. Their versatility comes from a unique combination of properties. When used in lotion-type preparations, they solubilize actives, as well as add a "silky feel" without greasiness. They are water-soluble, odorless, neutral, lubricating, non-volatile and non-irritating and make excellent coupling agents, solvents, vehicles, humectants, lubricants, binders and bases. Blending CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG products can tailor the humectancy, viscosity or melting point to fit a particular application. Pharmaceuticals CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs and MPEGs are formulated to meet applicable requirements of the National Formulary (NF) and are widely used as excipients for pill and tablet binding or coating, gelatin capsules, ointments and creams, liquid medications, and suppositories. They are also used as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in such products as laxatives and colonic lavage solutions. They have unique medicament solvent properties, low toxicity, blandness and good water solubility. Polyethylene glycols make excellent water-soluble ointment bases; they spread easily and evenly over the skin even if the skin is moist. Their good water solubility makes it easy to incorporate aqueous ingredients in the formulation, and they do not become rancid or have nutritional value to support microbial growth.
