This is THE MAKING OF STEEL by the American Iron and Steel Institute, 94 pages. 11" tall. 1979(?) Many photos. From the Preface: "AMERICAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE receives a steady stream of letters from people who are interested in knowing how steel is made. These questions originate from: (1) students in high schools, colleges, and graduate school; (2) businessmen who need enough information about steel making to relate their own activities to it; (3) news media people who need a wider steel background against which they can set their stories; and (4) others interested in the steel industry for a variety of reasons ranging from financial to cultural. "Most books on the general topic of steel making presuppose at least elementary knowledge of the subject on the part of the reader. The sum total of literature on steel fills extensive special libraries and is far too technical for untrained readers to understand. The Making of Steel is designed to provide interested laymen with enough technical knowledge concerning steel making so they can reach reasoned, factually-based decisions concerning the industry's challenges and progress. "Readers should bear in mind that, for most simple statements made here, many qualifications are possible. Much additional and supporting data could be included in a longer presentation intended for experts and for the half-million men and women who earn their livelihoods in one segment or another of this vast industry. "Process descriptions contained here are intended to represent general industry practice and may not necessarily apply to any specific company or plant. In the steel industry as in all progressive industries, techniques and equipment are continually being improved as individual companies strive to obtain a technological edge over their competitors. "The sources of information consulted in preparing The Making of Steel include almost all of the Institute's member companies and a wide range of publications published by them and their suppliers." All of the photos are in black and white print. Thanks for looking ! r24-j16-ae
