Tools Used in Felling, Bucking, and Processing Trees: Chapter 10 from Harvesting Timber Crops, by A. E. Wackerman, published by McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York, NY, 1949. Reprinted by Nation Builder Books, Leesburg, VA, 2006, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 photocopied booklet, 21 pages. Please note this is a new photoduplicated reproduction, not an original. This is a reproduction of only one chapter from Harvesting Timber Crops, pages 157 to 177, inclusive. There may not be long-forgotten tools or anything else surprising here, but what you get is a good, solid discussion of the axe and saw as they had been used in the forests of North American for over a century, before the widespread application of power tools. I suspect that by the time this book came out in the late 1940s, most of the discussion in this short chapter no longer held much relevance to most of the lumbering operations then existing. Tool collectors will find particularly valuable the chart of axe head patterns (part of which I used as a watermark on the front cover), and the chart of axe handle types -- both charts attributed to Collins Axe Co. -- as well as the concise discussion of caring for, sharpening, and setting saws and axes. Collectors of antique power saws will of course be interested by the three pages on chain saws, drag saws, and circular saws, plus the full page chart on filing chain saw cutting teeth. The chapter closes with a discussion and pictures of the peavey, the log jack, wedges, froes, poles, and spuds.
