Aunt Bea's Backyard Beehives Top Bar Hive Starter Kit Shipped Fully Assembled, As Pictured, And Ready To Use A Revolutionary Top Bar Design (Patent Pending)    Your Starter Kit comes with everything you will need to get started. Included is a bee jacket, goatskin gloves, smoker, hive tool, bee brush, and one hive.  The hive measures 4 feet long by 12 inches high by 15 inches wide. Up to 30 top bars can installed depending upon how you choose to configure it. 4 additional top bars are provided as well. Other items included are 8 corks for use in the entrance holes, 1 follow board (false back), 1 queen excluder and 2 - 1 quart feeder platforms. (Quart mason jars are not supplied in shipped packages) The hive body is constructed from 1 inch pine and is assembled using premium decking screws and stainless steel hardware. The hive is shipped fully constructed and ready to use. The pine body is weatherproofed using a natural mix of raw flax seed oil and bees wax. The top to protect the hive interior from the elements is constructed of plywood, pine and is completely covered with acrylic flashing to protect the wood from water damage. There are two 6" x 17" hinged doors on one side of the hive body, each with a dual function. By turning a simple latch the outer door can be opened revealing a glass viewing window for the purpose of determining the health and well-being of the bees and the state of their hive development. Turning a second latch will release the hinged window frame which allows for entry into the hive body for such things as winter fondant feeding, removal of an empty queen cage or other reasons one might find to enter the hive without removal of the top which disturbs the natural temperature and pheromones of the hive. The two hive ends are of identical design with each having 3 - 1" holes for bee access and ventilation. The provided corks can be installed in these holes to reduce access or to help maintain a moderated temperature during the colder months. Each end also has a 1 quart liquid feeder capability located and filled from outside the hive body. When not in use the feeder ports have covers that protect the hive from inclement weather, robber bees or other pests.   The removable false back/follower board is typically inserted to reduce the interior hive space for winter temperature control but takes on another important function as well. With both ends of the hive open as entrances, it can be used to divide the 48" hive into two 24" nucleus (nuc) hives for the purpose of developing a supply of new bees to start new hives, (aka "splitting") or into two 24" perpetual hives in search of an exceptionally strong traditional colony or a combination of a nuc and perpetual hive. The queen excluder can be inserted into two raised channels located mid way through the hive body. The excluder is constructed from tradition screening as used in the Langstroth hive. The screen prevents the queen, due to her size, from moving past the center of the hive thereby guaranteeing the development of pure comb honey from which she is excluded and eliminating mixing of brood comb with honey comb. Some Top Bar Hive producers advertise lower prices for unassembled hives with expensive add ons. Aunt Bea's Top Bar Hive is shipped "Fully Assembled"  and "As Pictured"  for the price listed.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
