This hand-held protector for checks was patented October 17, 1916, and was produced around that time.   It was manufactured by Arnold Inc. in Flint, Michigan.   It stamps one number at a time, determined by the brass knob on the side.   The brass lever by the handles locks and released the check.  Squeezing the handles prints and embosses the number or word into the check.   Besides the numbers 1 through 0, it also offers, "Pay," "and," and dollar and cent signs.   It is 7 3/4" long.   There are some numbers and letters crudely engraved on the main body and brass lever next to the handles as shown in the last 2 pics.   This is a lovely piece of antique precision business/office machinery.
