This antique tool was originally made as a Valve Stem Seat Cutter, Model 3V-1A (make unknown). It is also a very Versatile Steel Vise / Clamp Tool Holder / File Holder / Rod Holder / Tube Holder / Pipe Holder / Shaft Holder Jig Handtool. Body is 4" x 2-3/4" x 1-3/4". The main clamp bar is grooved, and the two "fingers" it contacts with have deep "V" notches - great for holding pipes, tubes, rods, stems, shafts 3/16" - 5/8" dia, and also odd-shaped objects. The diagonal square clamp feature is for holding a tool, likely a file, or chisel or other cutting tool; this square clamp can be removed (and replaced with any tool or tool holder that you can get to fit) or its angle changed (from about 25 degrees to 90+ degrees, has position markings for 30 degrees and 45 degrees); and it comes clamping a small hard steel lightly magnetized cutting edge. The screw on the left is about centered on a clamped object if object is 1/4" - 1/2" dia., and can be precisely advanced or retracted to adjust held object position. Our unique and important uses of it are: (1) Press-fitting a cap or top onto or a pin into a pipe, tube, rod or shaft object securely clamped down by main clamp. (2) As a mini-lathe. This is done by securing a cutting tool at the right angle (using the diagonal square clamp), and then lightly securing the pipe, tube, rod or shaft object in the main clamp where it will still fairly freely rotate, then attaching a hand vise or power drill to the right end of the object, turning the hand vise or drill On while pushing the object's left end onto the secured file / chisel / other cutting tool, or against the left screw. Other Possible (untested) Uses of this jig: (1) Chisel sharpener. (2) Drill bit sharpener. (3) Bolt threading or rethreading. (4) Pipe diameter expander / tube expander. (5) Cementing, soldering or brazing rods, tubes or other objects coming together at various angles. The two countersunk screw holes are for bench top or desk top mounting. This vise/clamp tool is great for most shops; especially useful for crafts, modeling and vehicles.
