The 2600A series is FAR superior to the 2400 series. The 2600 series has an embedded Test Script Processor (TSP) in each instrument, which runs scripted programs written in a simple and intuitive programming language called Lua.  Keithley chose to update/upgrade their instruments language to the newer Lua.  This so much easier to use than the old SCPI language (based on extensions to gpib, from 40 years ago) that the 2400 series uses.  Importantly, Lua executes much faster on the embedded processor than SCPI.  The instrument still includes a gpib port along with the new Ethernet port (first introduced with the A series), which is supported by the LXI (LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation) Standard for Test and Measurement.  Keithley and many others have adopted LXI as "the LAN-based successor to GPIB, [which] combines the advantages of Ethernet with the simplicity and familiarity of GPIB." SPECIAL FEATURES: Several exclusive features/upgrades make our Keithley 2600 series SMUs even better than the stock units from Keithley: This 2612A is equipped with M-tech programs loaded into the 2612A's memory, which give you the following additional features (not included by Keithley): screen saver, screen dimmer, display blanker, simple Voltmeter/Ammeter mode and power AC sine wave generation with frequencies from 0.1-100Hz (more details below). Now from the front panel, the user can push a few buttons to access these key features Keithley did not include in these instruments. This is exclusively made possible by M-tech's own in-house custom written software programs, which come preloaded with all of our 2600 series SMUs. OUR FOUR MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO SMUs: Here at M-tech we are working on addressing what we see as the four weaknesses of most SMUs: high cost, long term (5-10 years) instrument durability, ease of use of the capabilities of this technology and no/low AC functionality. 1) cost: So to help you save money and make these great machines affordable, we offer you quality new/reconditioned/refurbished SMUs, which have been thoroughly tested/verified to meet Keithley's specs. Occasionally we run across new machines that a company had purchased but either changed/downsized their testing setup before the instrument was used, upgraded, liquidated, etc.... 2) long term durability: For reconditioned/refurbished machines, old batteries are replaced, displays assessed/replaced as needed and front panel push buttons tested/overhauled if needed, retested and backed with our warranty. Further to combat the dimming due to aging that the vacuum fluorescent displays suffer from we offer our own in-house developed and tested screen saver and display blanker programs preinstalled in the device's memory. 3) ease of use: preloaded with M-tech's simple to use DC-DMM mode programs, so that with the push of a button the unit can be used as either a DC Voltmeter, DC Ammeter, resistance tester, or continuity tester. 4) AC functionality: ordinarily these Keithley SMUs do not support AC functionality from the front panel and Keithley does not include any programs to generate AC. We developed our own easy to use AC program and preloaded it. This gives you front panel controlled AC power sine-wave output with selectable voltage, current and frequency (0.1-100Hz). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (especially for those unfamiliar with source meters): We are utterly convinced that source meters will replace conventional Digital Multi-Meters (DMMs) for almost all high-end measurement needs. DMMs by themselves are great for the common fundamental measurements of electronics: continuity, R, V and I of a component, or circuit with no other voltage/current source than that of either the DMM, or of the circuit under test. Broadly speaking we believe that most users of DMMs and electronic test equipment have one of two goals: goal 1) Quick check of continuity, R, V and I. (this includes low duty cycle, or occasional usage for data logging R, V and I measurements) What is being measured, measurement of a component, or circuit w/ no other measurement source than either the DMM, or the circuit under test . goal 2) Data acquisition, high speed automated measurements, high precision and high accuracy measurement (5.5 significant figures and up) testing of circuits, or components under variable voltage, current, or power conditions load type testing of power supplies, dynamic testing, sink type testing, VI curve tracing, Advanced measurement techniques such as delta mode, dithering, low level measurements and more. What is being measured, measurement of a component, or circuit w/ measurement sources, sinks, etc... besides the DMM, or the circuit under test Goal 1 is perhaps the single largest volume usage of DMMs, Millions of units in operation Goal 2 is an important market for DMMs, that while lower in volume, is the most demanding on the instruments and becoming more important each day. We believe that conventional handheld DMMs are sufficient and optimal for goal 1 in the majority of cases. It is goal 2 where SMUs really shine. Here DMMs are often insufficient to use by themselves. Additional instruments are most often required. These additional instruments are most often: power supplies, function generators, arbitrary waveform generators, fixed loads, dynamic loads, dynamic sources, electrometers, sub-micro Volt meters, isolation subsystems, counters, pulse generators and more. SMUs eliminate the need for these additional instruments in most cases. And for the rare cases where additional instrumentation is required, the amount of additional instrumentation is often cut in half because of the superior functionality of the SMU as opposed to that of a loan DMM. Also, while the tight integration of the SMU is wonderful, Keithley has refined it such that the instrument is useable for a single function. Ease of configuration and connections is revolutionized: no more stacked banana connectors, stacks of bnc T s, etc... wires from 3 different instruments criss-crossing your work area, .... The SMU is the only thing connected via 2 wires (sometimes 4, 6, or more is needed). Also when data acquisition is desired, the SMUs greatly simplify the process. Instead of having a power supply, DMM and load tester (3 instruments), each needing to be individually addressed, individually programmed and coordinated/synchronized, with an SMU, only 1 instrument needs to be addressed, programmed, etc.... What does all of this translate into: SAVED TIME!!! How? This is because the SMUs enabled increased reliability of test setups (less machines to break/weak links in the test chain), decreased frustration, decreased wiring, decreased connectors, saved rack/desk/table space, elimination of the need for an array of load resistors and more....
