Gastrafate, by Bioniche, is a suspension containing a polyanionic saccharide, Ulmus fulva (slippery elm). It is a non-systemic, demulcent, surface active gastrointestinal protectant which provides supplementary support to the physiologic elements of the GI tract responsible for restoring normative function. Reduction of acid may offer relief in the short-term, but long-term acid reduction may hinder the digestion which is dependant on stomach acid. When ulcer treatment with conventional drugs is discontinued without concurrent removal of the stimulus for ulceration, horses quickly re-develop the ulceration. Gastrafate® provides direct, on-contact support to the mucosal lining, allowing it to heal by itself. A study conducted over a 3.5-year period with 32 equine veterinarians in an open-labeled field test involving 209 horses. Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria for HorsesLow-grade colic, inappetence or diarrhea for more than 5 days who failed adequate deworming therapies by owners and were with and without history of ulcers by endoscopy. Results showed that 85% of horses with ulcer-associated colic and 91% of horses with diarrhea-associated colic showed improvement by four days.
