< THE BAND SAW- A GUIDE BOOK FOR FLIERS, SAWYERS AND WOODWORKERS  BY  SIMONDS MANUFACTURING Self-Publishing is not exclusive to the early 21st century and the likes of Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. An early example is this book from 1921. It was  compiled and  self-published by the  Simonds Manufacturing Company a company established in Fitsburgh, Massachusetts in the long ago year of 1832. It was a sprawling company at the time of five factories and twelves branches and they dubbed themselves “The Saw Makers”. According to the book the “Saw Makers” were deluged by numerous inquiries from the public on information regarding circular saws, machine knives and of course band saws. This prompted the company to release a series of booklets on said subjects.   The first released in the series was aptly titled “The Circular Saw” and was soon followed up with “The Band Saw” targeting sawyers, filers and woodworkers. This booklet draws on their experience in the manufacture of steel cutting edges which spanned at the time of publication an impressive 89 years. With little changed in saws its likely much of the information they published then may still be relevant even now almost a hundred years and a new millennium later. As you can see by the table of contents below this vintage publication, long out of print, holds a treasure trove of information. It would make a fascinating read to peel back the layers of time and see how much of this information has stood the test of time and reveal what relevance it may still hold in our present day twenty-first century.
