My Item Number 564 Title: Vintage Printing Block Up For Your Consideration Vintage Letterpress BRASS Printing Block. Design: BISSELL CARPET SWEEPER Material: Solid Brass Mounted on an Steel Block Approximate Size Total: 2-1/2“ High 8” Wide Weight 4 lbs. 7 oz. Solid Brass - on its backside it lays 3/8" tall which is mounted on a Steel block to bring it to Type High (The exact height to print from). The solid brass print blocks were very rare. I believe these were used in long press runs, as they would hold up better than foundry type or wood type. I purchased thousands of old print blocks from several printing shops over 30 years ago. Some of these print shops were in the family for 3 or more generations. I have a small handful of auto related or National Geographic’s that are solid brass. Less than 2 dozen. I also have another group of ornate designs. We never used them because they had to be either mounted on a Zinc or foundry type block, to bring them up to type high, or used on special presses. They are not “Type High”. I have 1 that is mounted on a type metal block to make it “type high”. The reason for this, is that if somehow there was too much pressure, the type metal would give before the brass metal would. The two that I have both tops are in good shape, while the bottoms each have a corner that is damaged. The bottoms can be replaced very easily and inexpensively.
